Here is Grok’s analysis of the overall GDP numbers:
Canada’s per-capita GDP fell further behind the U.S. over the last decade. The break is sharp and mostly post-2014.
• From the late 1990s to 2015, real GDP per person grew at nearly the same pace in both countries (~1.5% a year). After 2015, Canada slowed to ~0.8% while the U.S. stayed near 2%.
• 2014–2024: Canadian GDP per person rose only ~3%; the U.S. rose ~20%. The gap widened from about CA$11,000 (1999) to ~CA$24,000 (2024). Canada went from ~83% of the U.S. level to ~72%.
• Labour productivity: +27% in Canada vs +68% in the U.S. since 1999. Relative Canadian productivity is down ~26% since the late 1990s.
• Business investment per worker fell ~5% in Canada (2007–2024) and rose ~58% in the U.S. Canadians now get about 54 cents of capital per worker for every U.S. dollar (closer to 41 cents on machinery and equipment).
• The 2014–15 oil crash hit Canadian energy investment hard; U.S. shale recovered and expanded. More Canadian growth shifted into lower-productivity domestic sectors (housing, construction, services).
• Faster population growth, especially temporary residents after 2020, raised total GDP while flattening or cutting output per person.
• Other contributors: more small firms, weaker ICT and R&D investment, and a rising public-sector share of employment. Much of the measured gap is at the top of the income distribution.
My statement in no way said Canada is collapsing. I was pointing to the very poor performance of Canadian per capita GDP. The cope part was an attempt to point out that it has severely lagged the US per capita GDP and that should be unacceptable to Canadians. You have vast natural resources and talent yet government policies refuse to use them or allow them to be used effectively. You get what you accept, and Canadians have been accepting subpar leadership as far as economics are concerned.
@jamishill1@Q_TheStormRider Massive cope going on here. Take a look at Canada’s per capita GDP and compare it to the US and you will see how uninformed that statement is.
Canada vs US GDP per capita (current US$, World Bank):2013: CA ~$52.6k, US ~$53.4k
2025: CA ~$55.7k, US ~$90.0k
CA 2014 drop: Due to oil price drop and not political bad calls.
What followed: Trudeau elected, weak business investment per worker, stalled productivity, then a population boom that was almost all unfettered immigration. Total GDP rose. Output per person did not. Trudeau policy caused immigrate numbers to explode. Carney (PM since Mar 2025) cuts new arrivals some however has not invested in or diversified the economy enough. Now his trade war threatens negative growth. #cdnpoli #Canada #GDP #productivity
This is a result of people being unwilling to sacrifice and defer buying things they want while deferring payments on their loan causing the principle to rise to more than their initial loan. They pin their hopes on taxpayers (people that work for a living many of whom decided they couldn’t afford school) bailing them out. I have no sympathy for them as they took the loan and were of legal age to sign for it.
Wrong. The Democrats wrote the initial legislation to reduce the subsidies over time when the atrocious "Obamacare" legislation was written. Republicans are under no obligation to fund a plan that continues supporting the Dems socialist agenda. The Dems could have changed this under Biden, so who is really at fault?
The real problems are the number of hull compression/decompression cycles on these former SSBNs now SSGNs. Metal fatigue is not something to mess with when you have a crew involved. They may be louder than the Virginia class but they are still very quiet. People in this thread are confusing the converted SSGNs with the SSBNs which are the 5th Trident submarines and beyond.
@GailVazOxlade How much of that "down 40%" is due to deliberately not traveling in protest, versus just a bad Canadian economy driven by the terrible economic policies of Carney?
The Bank of Canada just said that monetary policy cannot correct the Canadian economy following Carney’s policies and response to tariffs . Carney hopes to get a majority government before the bottom falls out because he won’t be able to get one in a few months as this disaster unfolds.
@PeterHRatcliffe No the war was started when the Venezuelan government gave support to drug runners bringing death to US citizens. Finally we are doing something about it with explosive results. 🇺🇸
@PeterHRatcliffe You are making the wrong conclusion. You have 4 times their population and you cannot produce modern military equipment. Sounds like an economy that will never thrive.
Wow more Bravado. The US has all of the arctic it needs in Alaska but the difference is we can defend it from threats. All you could do is raise your elbows and sing the Canadian anthem. Get a military, get an economy, limit immigration and then you can think about the geopolitical significance of the arctic. The US is great because we have a mindset that does not bleed over to most Canadians.
Let me interpret this: After 10 years you will still be behind what your exports used to be to America. Now that’s a real fair deal. With leadership like that you will have 10 million more immigrants sharing an economy smaller than it is now. Keep those elbows up so you can brush aside people in line to get government handouts.
What was it that the road to hell was paved with? Oh yeah, that was good intentions. Leftist rule ALWAYS leads to economic ruin. The belief that controlling everything by an all knowing, all powerful government can work keeps just enough people voting for them to get the free stuff only to find out that it was made in China.
