C. difficile burden predicts increased hospital cost, but not in the way we expected! High cycle threshold PCR positives (as marker of colonization) may be costlier than “true” infections. 1 more good reason for diagnostic stewardship :) https://t.co/MmzCXeJ6ao @GIDIuva@UVA_ID
Interesting observation: COVID-19 in Virginia appears to be hitting hardest in cities where mobility returned quickly to baseline (i.e. VA Beach, Norfolk), but so much the case in rural areas (i.e. Shenandoah Valley). @UVA_ID
Congrats to @joesph_wiencek @andrewparsonsMD@costisifri for their excellent summary and analysis of COVID-19 antibody testing @UVA_ID ! Let's stick to the guidelines.
P.S. I'm loving the bubble plot : ) https://t.co/hxMn28Ver9
Noticing a disturbing VA COVID-19 trend focused in the tidewater area, perhaps hastened by July 4 weekend (~4-5d incubation)/summer vaca? Any other thoughts why this area in particular? @UVA_ID
These are the latest data from VDH by health district. Test positivity in Loudoun has nearly doubled in the past week. Similarly concerning trends in Richmond, Piedmont...all despite increased testing.
#COVID19 test positivity is climbing in much of #Virginia despite increased testing. Cases, test positivity and hospitalizations are climbing in most areas of the US outside the NE corridor. It's time to learn from those who moved too fast - #Pause Phase 3 now. #cville#roanoke

Hot off the presses! A deeper dive into patient outcomes with C. diff decision support, including “prevented” tests. Many thanks to my co-authors @costisifri @KBEnfieldMD and the C. diff coalition for their strong work! @UVA_ID https://t.co/qGHEf4Ze6d
Who would’ve thought Anthony Fauci would have been the topic of an SNL cold open, and played by Brad Pitt! P.S. don’t inject disinfectant. https://t.co/DrqfcTG1RZ
Pre-print RCT of HCQ vs SOC. N=150, mild dz, young.
- No antiviral efficacy (primary endpoint)
- Possible resolution of symptoms faster in small subset w/ no other antiviral therapy
- CRP down more
Seems more an anti-inflammatory than an antiviral

Plaquenil may work for #COVID19 or it may not. What is definitely does is hurt (even kill) some people. It’s a small percentage thankfully, but it means that we need to carefully study it before peddling it to the public. Politics need to remain out of the scientific process
