There's a lot of interesting parallels between The Backrooms and Tarkosvksy's 1979 film, Stalker. Both are what would be considered liminal horror, about traversing a strange and unknowable place. And both Clark in the Backrooms and the stalker find they're more at home in these strange worlds. They are outsiders in reality, and go to these bizarre, often hostile places to seek comfort in a place where they understand its rules.

The big difference thought, is that Stalker is a movie from a Christian mindset, where the Zone (as the liminal space is called) becomes a place of hope for the despairing. The Backrooms has seemingly no moral direction, and exists as if indifferent to human beings at all.
