Tbf, in the defense of newer screenwriters who are utterly confused...
There's no reliable site that tells you how to become a screenwriter, what to do, where to start, why you probably need a rep, how to get a rep, and all that.
Because there's truthfully no reliable, predictable process like there is in other industries. But that doesn't mean a simple map can't exist. You don't know what you don't know until you know (...no no, that makes sense). And then you don't know when things change--which they do!--until someone tells you.
On top of all that, you'll get competing opinions on How Things Work, sometimes from your peers, who mean well but usually don't know anything either. Or older industry people, who also mean well, but broke in during a totally different era, so their advice might be outdated.
All this to say, I think we'll put together a primer for screenwriters on @PipelineArtists at some point--an honest, grounded overview, not some janky, vague roadmap trying to funnel you into consultation services from some glorified blogger. Only funneling you to our contests! (I'm kidding, you don't have to enter contests, calm down)
From "I don't know if I wanna be a screenwriter, where do I start, what's a scene heading???" to "Okay I've been at this a while, and I have a script I'm ready to send out, now what? And then what happens?"
Because rn, I see a lot of you--even ones who HAVE been in the screenwriting orbit for many years--are just utterly befuddled on what to do, what to write, what concepts have 0 chance, and what you should and shouldn't be spending your time on.
Tbh, I used to think "oh well they're just not doing their research," but man...it's a mess out there. I get it. Confusion warranted.
I was at this show. The reason he asked about Bend, Oregon was because Letterman took a question from the audience before they started filming and the guy said “I’m from Bend, Oregon. How many neckties do you have?” And he had to clarify Bend was in central Oregon.
Nobody growing up looking at AI art will ever be inspired to create art on their own. We will enter a creative dead end where nothing new will be created.
I’m just now realizing that there are kids out there whose first exposure to studio Ghibli isn’t Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro but AI slop images and that absolutely breaks my heart.
I miss burning CDs. I just liked the feeling of piecing together 80 minutes worth of music and trying to make it a cohesive, emotionally consistent set of tracks. It felt like you were making something. It was a way to enjoy songs together rather than independently.

“The GOAT debate” in all sports is driving me crazy. Why does there have to be a GOAT? Just enjoy great players now and don’t compare them to players that aren’t playing anymore. Stats out of context of the era in which they occurred is stupid.
