Talk of Nolan's Odyssey is already, happily, dying down. We may be sure many of its viewers have come away with an impression that they have profited richly enough from Homer's tale, and may now dispose of it. This iteration will reap its appointed Oscars. It will not live long in many minds.

Thus does our blighted era of cinema continue to waste itself.

Before obscurity claims it whole I wish to submit as a Christian that the most odious aspect to this whole affair remains its dour pseudo-Christian moralizing, so thoroughly and inharmoniously alien to Homer. I note with distaste that some who count themselves Christians and Conservatives have even approved of this, clamoring that any more ancient portrait of Odysseus could not have been rendered "sympathetic."

I do not myself see how Odysseus should be any more barred from our sympathies than bloody-handed King David, or Samson, or Joshua, or even Charlemagne, or for that matter Sir Winston Churchill. But even were we doomed to judge all Greek heroes as villains entire, Homer's testament would be still have been far better represented without saccharine molestation.

The reasons why were well articulated by C.S. Lewis — concisely, that we access unique opportunities for elevation precisely through wrestling forthrightly with the contrasting commitments and emphases of other ages.

That we should flay their tales and wear their skins simply to hear our own most maudlin words coming from their mouths adds insult to self-injury.

Homogenization of these myths represents a de facto attempt to repaint the entirety of the human spirit in the uniform grey of a bureaucrat's hallway, fit only for government by clerks, snakes, and eunuchs. It is no accident that the film is so drab it could be used as camouflage in a lifeless wasteland.

Difficult to imagine how I could despise it more. 0/10, would have paid to ensure that it had never been made.
