The "Return of the Oyster Fishers at Cancale" at the end of the day depicts a group carrying baskets of oysters gathered for dinner.
This painting is a study, a “practice” before the artist paints a more detailed version. French artist François Feyen-Perrin painted this in 1874.
The Museum’s newest acquisition is one of the oldest pieces in the collection! This wooden #statue of St. Eligius, the patron saint of goldsmiths and farriers, was likely carved in southern Germany in the 1500s.
The statue is now on display on the 3rd floor of the Museum.
This watercolor of “Drydocks with Workers” likely depicts #Milwaukee in the 1930s–Jones Island, to be exact! An inspector watches six men at work repairing fishing boats.
While the Museum is dedicated to the art of work, that focus reaches beyond factories and heavy industry! Some paintings depict farms and agriculture in an idyllic light–doesn’t “The Cobblestone Farm” look #cottagecore?

“Plowing With Oxen Teams” prepares the fields for planting by breaking up the topsoil. Germinating seeds reach the surface more easily if the soil is loose.
These farmers have chosen the perfect day for this task--look at that blue sky!
Painted in 1866 by William Watson.
@AmbriaTaylor@LaMujerVoluble@ScottieMeyers@MSOE No snark intended, at all. Our apologies. We do address these matters in both wall text and books we have published. Twitter remains a difficult forum for serious, in-depth discussions on any subject. You may also email [email protected]. Our director will personally reply.
@AmbriaTaylor@LaMujerVoluble@ScottieMeyers@MSOE We would welcome a discussion of how the Museum has evolved in the 15 years since these articles (or blogs) were produced. Contextualization and diversification are key elements of our strategic plan. Additionally, less than 2% of the collection comes from "a certain period."
“The Architecture of Agriculture” is now open! Come view over 50 years of rural America through the #photography of David Plowden. As with much of the artist’s work, many of these scenes are no more: they exist only in memory or in scattered remains across the countryside.
Over 50 years of photography is distilled in this collection of vanishing views of America’s past. As with much of Plowden’s work, many of these scenes are no more: they exist in memory or in scattered remains across the countryside.

“The Architecture of Agriculture” opens tomorrow! The Grohmann Museum once again showcases the #photography of #Americanartist David Plowden! The exhibition looks at feed mills, grain elevators, and barns: the human impact on the landscape of America.
The Museum’s new exhibit is coming soon! “The Architecture of Agriculture” showcases the photography of David Plowden in honor of the artist’s 90th birthday. Over 50 years of photos are distilled in this collection of vanishing views of America’s past. The exhibit opens this Fri!
