That said, I’ve had /mostly/ positive experiences explaining it to colleagues in recent years. The people in my lab have been nothing but supportive. My advisor in particular is incredibly thoughtful on the topic.

Disability can be really difficult to explain to people. Heck, I’ve had to sit my own MHC down and explain how her language around my disability was seriously insulting. (she was very receptive to the feedback, though)
