@HLDocherty For what it's worth, I'm 99% sure that Jim Butcher has never been pregnant, but the words "quirked up" must have appeared at least a dozen times in his last novel.
You're probably fine.

@Jamie_Nash I've been out of the screenwriting world for a long time, so I bow to your wisdom there.
As for novel comps, the last time I went looking for an agent, they weren't a thing... and now they are. I expect this, too, will pass.
@Jamie_Nash Of course, it's worth noting that the Harry Potter references, in my experience, were often from journalists who weren't awesome at describing things. I remember someone calling Children of Blood and Bone Harry Potter in Africa. It isn't.
@Jamie_Nash I can also see where it helps weed out someone who read one book in a genre and doesn't actually know the genre all that well, or understand the expectations.
@Jamie_Nash As for avoiding megasellers when it comes to comparison, I can think of a few reasons why you'd avoid it.
Frankly, megasellers are almost their own genre, and to some extent they happen by accident. To say "I have the next Hunger Games" is setting someone up for failure...
@Jamie_Nash As for books in general, I think there are plenty of reasons for comps. They really can work as a marketing tool, as one bestseller was tagged as "Scream meets Scooby-Doo." Heck, Monster Stompers is Godzilla meets Ghostbusters, but with kids...

(I say this having done the first three on a professional level.) #scriptchat
