Lunchtime has arrived☀️
Today marks the day in 1758 when Noah Webster was born (known in Japan as Dictionary Day). The American English dictionary he compiled showed that words are not merely tools of communication, but can themselves serve as measures by which we carve up the world. The act of stacking definition upon definition quietly multiplies the layers of language.
Shall we enjoy lunchtime today while looking back on the era when we studied English by flipping through paper dictionaries😆

October 15, 1944. At 1 p.m., Hungarian radio interrupts its programming with a message from the country's leader, Admiral Miklós Horthy. Hungary is done with the war. It has signed an armistice with the Soviet Union.
For a few hours, Budapest celebrated.
Hitler had seen it coming. He'd already sent his favorite commando, Otto Skorzeny, the man who had rescued Mussolini from a mountaintop prison a year earlier.
That same morning, Horthy's son Miklós Jr., known as Miki, went to a secret meeting he thought was with envoys from Tito's partisans. It was a trap. Skorzeny's men burst in, overpowered him, rolled him up in a carpet, and threw him in a truck. Within hours he was flown out of the country and sent to the Mauthausen concentration camp.
The next morning, Skorzeny led a column of troops and tanks straight up Castle Hill to Horthy's palace. The Hungarian guards barely fought back. It was over in about half an hour.
With his son held hostage, Horthy gave in. He took back the armistice, resigned, and handed power to Ferenc Szálasi, leader of the fascist Arrow Cross.
Hungary stayed chained to Germany. Over the next months, the Arrow Cross murdered thousands of Budapest's Jews on the banks of the Danube, and the city became one of the bloodiest battlefields of the war.
Miki Horthy survived the camps. His father never ruled again.
