The board game hobby has somehow made buying games more exciting than playing them.
New releases get announcements, previews, reviews, unboxings, and endless discussion. After a few weeks, it disappears.
Meanwhile, the game you've owned for five years and played 20 times barely gets mentioned.
We've built an entire culture around discovering the next game, but we've forgotten that the point was to play the one already on the table.
@Marky_X_ That would be lovely. I have a semi-weekly and monthly group but the former is primarily a ttrpg group. So between them and my wife... I probably only play 10 board games a month. And some of those will be other people's games.
Isn't it well understood at this point that White men, specifically, are being artificially kept out of employment and education?
So, you keep them out of the workforce and universities with all your DEI programs... then you yell at them because they can't get ahead?
Who is this ad for, exactly?
@Marky_X_ I do envy you if you have played your games 20 times. I'm lucky if a game hits the table more than once a year.
I've even taken to playing my co-op games solo just to get them on the table at all.
We have a local game store but they only seem to play mtg or 40k there.
@Marky_X_ You're absolutely right. Though, recency bias isn't a phenomenon only in the board game world.
People by and large like the shiny new toy more. Though board games have the people problem. You can imagine a whole lot of fun when buying a game but need people to get that fun.
do you own the content you think was stolen? then go sue people
otherwise - stop assuming anything was stolen
because otherwise
you might find yourself in court over it and be very sorry you're there.
@BlackSliverhive I asked permission from the artist who drew it to use it as my profile picture.
How is drawing something inspired by something plagiarism, but training a computer to draw something inspired by something not?
@BlackSliverhive Desounding to get to reference vs smudging sounds like semantics. It is still looking at a large number of examples and making sure it follows the rules. We are talking about the same method, just you see it as creativity on the machine's part instead of the one using it.
@BlackSliverhive It really doesn't. If I said that Nike shoes are made in sweat shops, does that make some kid wearing them complicit on sweat shops? No.
I don't think you're stealing. But AI tools require a lot of art or writing to learn from that is not compensated for to learn from.
@ShuaniMator Dealing with the limitations of AI to squeeze creativity out of it is a little bit of what I'm talking about. It only has what others have done to reference.
@BlackSliverhive I did not insult you. Unless you see yourself as an AI tool, I didn't even malign you. You are defending yourself, but I am not attacking you. I do not think you, or anyone is intrinsically linked to a tool they use.
@BlackSliverhive Can you please provide evidence that AI doesn't scan art and writing to learn to smudge it together? I'm not a programmer, but I read several pro AI articles 3 years ago that described how it worked just like the supposedly untrue talking points. I'm not harassing your friends.
@ShuaniMator Just like in the example that you like, if someone said Conan meets Powerpuff Girls. They wouldn't be taking the lore or necessarily the style like an AI would. Your mind filtered all that out to get superpowered sword and sorcery, or perhaps barbarian sisters defending a city.
@ShuaniMator How is a machine program smooshing together art/writing and putting it together as it is told to different than someone being inspired by different sources?
Because inspiration is not only mimicry. And shorthand explanations doesn't mean they actually copied those things.
@BlackSliverhive I think that they are threatening a lawsuit because I don't like AI is more zealous than thinking AI is stealing. I know you politely told me I was wrong, but I don't see how that makes me a zealot. Looking into machine learning, I have only seen better smudging of what exists.
