Goodyear employees secure R100,000 and four weeks’ pay per year served in landmark settlement
Workers at Goodyear South Africa’s Kariga plant have secured a landmark settlement after tough negotiations led by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa).
The deal, finalized on August 15, guarantees each worker a lump sum of R100,000 plus four weeks’ pay for every year of service. This is double the company’s original offer of R50,000 and two weeks’ pay.
The agreement will benefit 707 employees, including 552 Numsa members. Payouts range from an average of R234,000 for staff with fewer than five years of service to nearly R1 million for long-serving employees with more than 26 years.
Numsa General Secretary Irvin Jim hailed the outcome as a major victory but criticized Goodyear for refusing to explore alternatives that could have saved the plant. He warned that the closure, as operations shift to Europe, sets a “dangerous precedent” for multinationals abandoning South African manufacturing while still selling imports.
Jim urged government to raise tariffs on automotive, tyre, steel, and engineering products, ban tyre dumping, and tighten conditions on foreign companies benefiting from incentives.
