CASHLESS ECONOMY SURGES AS E-PAYMENTS HIT ₦384 TRILLION IN JULY 2025
Nigeria’s transition to a fully cashless economy is gaining pace as electronic payment transactions soared to ₦384 trillion in July 2025, compared to ₦280 trillion in August 2024, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, represented by the Director of Payment System Supervision, Opemi Yusuf, disclosed this at the Nigeria Fintech Week 2025 in Lagos.
📈 He noted that the volume of electronic transactions climbed from 3.9 billion in 2024 to 4.12 billion in 2025, reflecting growing public trust and digital inclusion in the financial system.
“The strong adoption of digital channels shows that Nigerians are embracing innovation and efficiency in payments,” the CBN stated.

✅ Why It Matters
•Transparency & efficiency: A cashless system reduces leakages and improves traceability of transactions.
•Financial inclusion: Millions of Nigerians are joining the formal financial system through mobile and online platforms.

New Tax Law: TIN Now Mandatory for Financial Services in Nigeria 🇳🇬
Starting January 1, 2026, all Nigerians—whether individuals or businesses—as well as non-residents, must present a Tax Identification Number (TIN) before they can:
•Open or operate bank accounts 🏦
•Access insurance services 🛡️
•Trade in stocks, bonds, and securities 📈
•Use other regulated financial services 💳
🔹 What is a TIN?
A Tax Identification Number is a unique number issued by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (@FIRSNigeria ) to track tax compliance. It works just like an identity card for financial and tax matters.
🔹 Why This Matters
1. Improves Transparency
This policy ensures that all financial activities can be traced to registered individuals or businesses. It helps curb money laundering, tax evasion, and illegal financial flows.
2. Expands the Tax Net
Nigeria has millions of active bank accounts but only a fraction of taxpayers. By linking TINs to financial services, the government can bring more people and businesses into the tax system, ensuring fairness and boosting national revenue.
3. Strengthens Financial System Integrity
Banks, insurers, and capital market operators will now have cleaner records since every client must be verified with a TIN. This increases investor confidence and supports financial stability.
4. Affects Both Nigerians & Foreigners
This isn’t limited to citizens—foreign residents and investors must also obtain a TIN to access Nigerian financial services. It ensures everyone plays by the same rules in the economy.
5. Supports the Renewed Hope Agenda
The move aligns with the government’s broader reform drive to strengthen institutions, reduce leakages, and make Nigeria’s tax and financial systems more transparent, digitalized, and globally competitive.
🚨 Key Takeaway
From January 1, 2026, no TIN = no access to banking, insurance, or capital market services in Nigeria.
👉 To avoid disruptions, individuals and businesses should apply early for their TIN through the FIRS or authorized channels.
