The chem students finished their study of the periodic table with the Periodic Properties Lab. They observed reactions to identify trends. They were amazed at the exothermic reaction of the calcium in water! #WeAreNewHorizons #BoldlyGoing #GSST @NHREC_VA

The chemistry students continued their work with calorimetry by collecting time/temperature data and utilizing Hess’ Law for calculations. We used high-tech calorimeters (aka coffee cups) and got good results! #WeAreNewHorizons #BoldlyGoing #GSST @NHREC_VA

FRC Team 122 was the 7th seeded alliance captain after qualification matches of the FIRST Chesapeake District Championship. They eliminated the 2nd & 3rd seeded alliances before falling to the 1st seed in finals. Way to leave it all on the field, NASA Knights! @NHREC_VA

Congratulations to FRC Team 122 for winning the Excellence in Engineering Award at the CHS Richmond Event. Way to go, NASA Knights! @NHREC_VA

FRC Team 122 competed over the weekend. With a tweaked robot and more experienced drive team, they were able to put in more cargo and hang from the bar for all matches! They were captain of the 4th seeded alliance but couldn’t get past the tough 1st seed. Nice work NASA Knights!

The FRC Team 122 robot and rookie drive team performed well at the CHS District Event. The robot hung from the bar for all matches! The team looks forward to the next event with hopes of securing a spot at the District championships. Nice work NASA Knights! @NHREC_VA

Utilizing the spectrometer as we explore if our solution of NaOH with a drop of phenolphthalein is a 1st, 2nd or zero order reaction in chemistry lab today. #GSST @NHGSST

The chemistry students began their long-term lab today – Synthesis and Analysis of a Coordination Compound. It looks like we have crystals of potassium tris(oxalato) ferrrate (III) trihydrate forming! #GSST @NHGSST

Investigated The Color of Chemistry by exploring the affinity of a dye for a fabric based on the chemical structure of the dye and fabric molecules and on the interaction between them. Different fabrics produced different colors when the same dye was used! #GSST @NHGSST

As chemistry students continue their exploration of molecular geometry, they were able to see the difference in bond length (and bond strength!) between the carbon atoms in a single, double and triple bond after building a C2H6, C2H4 and C2H2. #GSST @NHGSST

The chemistry students observed a distinctive color of light for several ionic salts using flame tests. Only a few elements give off characteristic light in the visible region of the spectrum. #GSST @NHGSST
