A U.S. Air Force crew member was rescued after their jet was downed over Iran, in a high-risk nighttime operation deep inside hostile territory.

U.S. officials say the mission ranks among the most complex in special operations history. It involved hundreds of personnel, dozens of aircraft, and full-spectrum intelligence capabilities.

American jets carried out strikes to keep Iranian forces away as rescue teams moved in, with fighting reported during the extraction.

The airman, equipped with a locator beacon and secure communications, was successfully recovered.

Afterward, two U.S. transport planes became inoperable at a remote site. Additional aircraft were flown in to extract all personnel, and the disabled planes were destroyed to avoid capture.
