A brief retrospection on Mariah’s career and why I believe she very rarely gets the flowers she so rightfully deserves.
It’s puzzling to me why she receives so much hate, when her talent and accomplishments are undeniable. I think this stems from numerous areas:
1. Success breeds scrutiny: When someone reaches the level of success Mariah has, they often become a target. She’s had such an unprecedented career, breaking records and staying relevant for decades. That kind of longevity can attract jealousy or criticism, especially in an industry where staying on top is difficult.
2. Her confidence: Mariah is unapologetically confident in her abilities, and that can rub some people the wrong way. When you combine that with her diva persona—something she’s leaned into as part of her public image—it can make people feel like she’s unapproachable or out of touch. But for fans, that confidence is part of what makes her so iconic!
3. “All I Want for Christmas Is You" overexposure: While it’s beloved by many, there’s a group of people who feel like they can’t escape the song every holiday season, and that overexposure can lead to backlash. But ironically, the fact that it’s “too popular” speaks to its timeless appeal.
4. Misogyny in the music industry: Female artists, especially those who reach legendary status, are often judged more harshly than their male counterparts. Mariah’s achievements are sometimes overshadowed by media narratives that focus on her personal life or her appearance, rather than her immense talent and contributions to music.
5. Her vocal changes over time: Mariah set the bar so high early in her career with her vocal range and precision, that any slight decline in her voice is magnified. Some people forget that every singer’s voice changes over time, especially after a 30+ year career, and it’s unrealistic to expect her to perform exactly like she did in her early days.
6. Shift in demographic appeal: Mariah’s early music was more pop-oriented and tended to cater to a predominantly white audience, something that was not a decision on her part. When she gained more creative control and started incorporating more R&B, hip-hop, and soul influences—genres that reflect her own identity—some of her early fans felt alienated. However, this shift was Mariah becoming more authentic and embracing who she had always been. Unfortunately, some people couldn’t accept that evolution and saw it as a departure from what they initially loved, rather than the celebration of her true self.
7. Racial bias: Mariah’s biracial identity has often been a point of contention in how she’s perceived. As she embraced more elements of her Black heritage in her music and personal expression, some audiences may have become uncomfortable. Racial biases can lead people to dismiss or critique artists unfairly when they move away from a more “safe” or “universal” (often code for white) sound.
8. Genre snobbery: Some critics and listeners still look down on R&B and hip-hop, considering them less sophisticated or mainstream than pop or rock. As Mariah embraced these genres more fully, especially starting with albums like Butterfly, some fans and critics who preferred her earlier pop style might have seen the change as a step down, even though she was pioneering new sounds and creating groundbreaking music.
Mariah’s journey has been about finding her own voice and freedom, and it’s unfortunate that some people couldn’t embrace that growth. But true Lambs recognize that her authenticity and genre-blending are what make her the legend she is.
Ultimately, the hate is likely rooted in a mix of her massive success, her confidence, and unfair expectations. But her Lambs know the truth: she’s a living legend, and no amount of criticism can take that away from her! What do YOU think drives the negativity toward her?
My teen idle heart says THANK YOU for seeing her!
Music has given me so many incredible gifts in life and seeing these songs going platinum has been a big cherry on top this year.
