Dear Somalis,
I urge you to be mindful and reconsider the MOU between Somaliland and Ethiopia. Whether you are Somali or Somalilander, as you would like to be called, Ethiopia is not merely seeking a port for trade and commercial purposes. On the contrary, they are looking to lease a piece of land for many years, which will eventually become theirs.
Make no mistake, once they invest billions of dollars in building a naval base and developing a navy, there will be no turning back. No other country will grant them a similar base, making the renewal of the lease inevitable every 50 to 60 years. Additionally, Ethiopia or any other country or even private entity would gradually expand the agreed-upon borders in such an important and sensitive base.
What is 50 km today could extend to 70-80 km, with an additional 10 km buffer zone for protection, even before the lease expires. Most of you involved in this agreement today will not be around when the current lease term ends. Therefore, it is crucial to be highly cautious about the legacy you're leaving for your children and grandchildren. Ensure that they are not burdened by today's mistakes. @musebiihi@HassanSMohamud@SomaliPM
