For everyone who celebrated the Buss Family selling the lakers last year, this is what I was worried about. Buss family for all its flaws represented a family business with real accountability. Good luck with these venture capitalists. Vile ppl too. No connection to the community
14/ 46 years, 11 championships, Showtime, Shaq and Kobe, Kobe’s own run, LeBron’s era. Nobody else in LA Lakers ownership history is within shouting distance of what the Buss family was able to accomplish. Stability and consistency being the key. And the banners to prove it.
The Los Angeles Lakers are being sold to American businessman Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a record breaking price over $12 billion, multiple sources told ESPN.
Kushner and Iger were involved in the expansion process in Las Vegas, but a stunning turn, they pivoted to make an aggressive offer to buy the Lakers from Mark Walter, who had purchased a controlling interest in the team from the Buss family last year.
13/ Now it’s Josh Kushner and Bob Iger. Kushner had to sell his Miami Heat stake to make this deal work. Iger joined Kushner’s venture firm Thrive Capital after his exit from Disney. Both were chasing a Vegas team a few months ago before pivoting to just buy the Lakers instead.
12/ Mark Walter bought in for a $10B valuation last October. Grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, son of a concrete plant worker, before ending up owning the Dodgers. Lasted less than a year as Lakers owner.
11/ In 2025 Jeanie and her siblings sold to Mark Walter at a $10B valuation, ending the family’s 46 year run. Each of the six kids walked away with roughly $1B in cash plus a small retained stake. Walter is also the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
10/ the Buss kids had their share of drama. Even through that family drama, the Lakers still won it in the 2020 bubble with LeBron, ring number 11 and the final ring for the Buss era.
9/ Fun fact on Jeanie: she dated and got engaged to Lakers coach Phil Jackson for 17 years starting in 1999, while he won 5 titles for the team. When he left to run the Knicks in 2014, the NBA actually made the two of them sign a conflict of interest agreement.
8/ Back in 2006 he’d already put the team in a trust naming his daughter Jeanie as controlling owner for life. All six kids (Johnny, Jim, Jeanie, Janie, Joey, Jesse) split 66% of the team equally.
7/ Dr. Buss died in 2013 at 80, capping a 34 year run as owner: 10 championships, 16 Finals appearances, and playoffs missed just twice. Best winning percentage in the NBA over that whole stretch. He’d already been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor.
6/ Buss was a legit high-stakes poker player too. Multiple WSOP cashes, regular on High Stakes Poker. He also quietly kept former players on the payroll when they got too sick to work.
5/ Enter Dr. Jerry Buss. PhD in physical chemistry from USC by age 24, worked at the Bureau of Mines and Douglas Aircraft before real estate made him rich enough to buy the whole package for $67.5M in 1979, which included the Forum, Kings, and the Lakers.
4/ Cooke’s 1979 divorce was the most expensive in history at the time. That’s the actual reason the Lakers, Kings, and the Forum ended up for sale at all.
3/ Jack Kent Cooke bought the Lakers in 1965 for $5.1M. As a teenager in Ontario he sold soap and encyclopedias door to door before building a media empire. He built the Forum, financed the 1971 Ali-Frazier fight (the first global closed-circuit broadcast).
2/ Bob Short brought the Lakers to LA in 1960 after test-running two games at the Sports Arena and seeing the crowds. He ran the team on almost no budget and told his own GM to basically forget the operation existed unless money needed sending back.
