@bsnl_care Our FTTH has been down nearly a month due to street cable damage. Complaints raised online & in person, but no response or update. Paid last month's bill for just 10 days of service; next bill due in 2 days. Poor support, even for a retired BSNL employee's connection.

Sridhar has shared the difficult decision we have taken to skip appraisals this year, given the rising costs and uncertain outlook for the software industry. Every software business will be having this discussion and making difficult choices.

These are real-world situations where there is no single right answer. The decision depends on what we choose to prioritise. These are also decisions AI cannot make for us.

During COVID, we made a similar decision. We offered free licences to customers, even though it meant losing revenue. This time, we had to deal with the sharp increase in server costs. We discussed these options internally.

Lay off employees. While layoffs are common across businesses, we felt it wasn't the right choice when our business is still growing. We have over a million customers to support and products to keep improving. Cutting jobs could affect both employees & customers. Instead, we want to reduce costs by focusing on R&D to make our products and infrastructure more efficient.

Reduce other expenses. We have decided to cut our marketing spend and are looking at ways to improve efficiency across the business.

Increase prices. Customers are already dealing with rising costs and geopolitical uncertainty. So we don't want to add to their burden. We want to first do what is in our control before doing this.

Skip appraisal. This was a difficult decision, but we wanted to avoid layoffs and price increases. So we made this tough decision.

As a private company, we have to take care of our customers and employees. Publicly listed companies also have shareholder expectations to consider.

There is no one right decision in these situations. Ultimately, it comes down to what we choose to prioritise and how we balance the needs of our customers, employees and business for the long term.

One of the early things we did at Zoho was build our own cloud infrastructure to run our applications. From databases, identity and messaging to search, storage and compute, we built it ourselves rather than depending on AWS or Google Cloud.

We have opened this infrastructure to developers as Catalyst, our serverless platform. What started as a way to extend Zoho is now being adopted by developers outside the Zoho ecosystem as well.

We are investing heavily in Catalyst and making it free for students, so they can build and deploy real applications without worrying about infrastructure costs.

Our goal is to give developers the infrastructure to turn their ideas into real products.

One of the most important differences between building for the next quarter and building for the next decade is where you choose to invest.

Instead of putting more capital into sales and marketing, we invested heavily in R&D and built our own technology capabilities. We relied more on organic, word-of-mouth growth.

That is why we built our own cloud infrastructure instead of relying on public cloud like AWS or Google Cloud.

When Zoho was small, building that cloud infrastructure looked like an unnecessary investment and distraction. But over time, it became a technology foundation that we could open up to developers through Catalyst, our serverless platform.

The same long-term thinking continues today. We’re investing heavily in Catalyst and making it free for students, giving them infrastructure to build and deploy real applications without worrying about infrastructure costs. We’re also setting up Student Clubs in colleges.

Not every investment has to create immediate revenue. Some investments create capabilities. Some create opportunities that may not become visible for years.

That’s the difference between optimizing for the next quarter and building for the next decade.

Getting started with spreadsheets the right way👇

If you think watching a million spreadsheet tutorials is the right way, you're not completely wrong—but there's one thing you need to get right first as a beginner.

Spreadsheets are huge, and trying to learn everything in a few days on your first job is just not going to work. Instead, learn spreadsheets horizontally. Get a basic understanding of all the features before going deep into any one of them. You don't need to watch a 45-minute video on pivot tables, conditional formatting, or anything else right away. You just need to know what these features are and how to use them at a surface level.

The reason is simple: no matter what job you're in, you won't get far knowing only one spreadsheet feature really well. You need to know data cleaning just to get started with your actual work. So trying to master every topic in depth before moving on isn't realistic, and it's not necessary either.

Start with a spreadsheet overview, get familiar with each feature, and then go deep from there.

vTitan Medical Instruments crossed ₹1 crore in monthly revenue for the first time. This year we hope to cross ₹10 crore revenue.

It has taken "only" 15 years. No VC would have continued the investment. vTitan has 10 new products in the pipeline and business is starting to accelerate now. The med-tech software stack is also getting deeper.

I post these so young entrepreneurs know how long it takes in such critical capability-requiring areas.

It takes many years to gain the capability and many more years to convert the capability into business.

There are times when success is quick. That is the exception than the rule. VCs tend to look for such exceptions. You cannot assume you will be the exception when you start.

I learned these from studying the Japanese.

Puducherry CBSE schools have dropped French this academic year because the new 3-language policy allows only one foreign language, and English fills that slot.

If French is removed from CBSE schools under the 3-language policy, who is responsible for:
1. Students who studied French from class 1 to 5 and now face discontinuity?
2. Private school French teachers facing job loss?

Puducherry is proud of its French roots. Shouldn't we have a policy to Protect French education here?
