Toyota's new CEO, Kenta Kon, believes the world's largest automaker has become too complex, saying the company is managing too many models, variants, and specifications that are driving up development and production costs. Speaking after taking over the top role, Kon explained that the growing number of configurations has created inefficiencies across Toyota's engineering and manufacturing operations, even as the company continues to lead global vehicle sales with more than 10.5 million units sold last year. Rather than making abrupt cuts, Toyota plans to gradually simplify its lineup by reducing unnecessary variants and focusing on products that deliver the most value to customers. The move is part of a broader strategy to improve profitability as the automaker faces rising material costs, increasing competition from Chinese brands, and heavy investment in next-generation electrified vehicles.
