The India I Carry: Independence, Identity, Inheritance, and Ideals

🇮🇳 India’s Independence Day — 15 August

Every year on 15 August, I think about what it really means to say that India became independent.

The simplest answer is that, on 15 August 1947, British colonial rule ended and India became a sovereign nation. But history is rarely that simple, and neither is freedom. India did not suddenly become a civilisation in 1947. India was already an ancient civilisation with its own languages, philosophies, traditions, knowledge systems, spiritual traditions, cultures, arguments, contradictions, and extraordinary capacity to absorb, adapt and endure. What changed in 1947 was that Indians reclaimed the political right to determine their own future.

That distinction matters to me.

I do not need to romanticise India to love her. I do not need to pretend that India has never failed, never suffered injustice, or never struggled with its own contradictions. And I certainly do not need to apologise for where I come from. Loving a country does not require turning it into mythology. Sometimes the most honest form of love is being able to see both the beauty and the brokenness and still say: this is mine, and I care what happens to it.

India is colour and contradiction. It is ancient philosophy alongside modern ambition, temples and technology, classical music and Bollywood, Sanskrit and hundreds of living languages, family traditions passed down through generations and young people determined to build something entirely new. It is noisy, argumentative, spiritual, entrepreneurial, complicated, sometimes maddening—and endlessly alive.

That is the India I carry with me.

But India's independence cannot be separated from the long story of India's survival. For centuries, powerful foreign Abrahamic empires, conquerors, and colonial forces came to India seeking territory, wealth, political control, cultural influence, or religious transformation. Some sought to rule India. Some sought to reshape India. Colonialism sought not only to govern India, but to define India through a European lens—to tell Indians who they were, what their civilisation meant, and where they belonged in the hierarchy of the world.

And yet, India remained.

The temples remained. The philosophies remained. The languages remained. The stories remained. The traditions remained. The memory remained. We lived. We breathed. We remembered. We rebuilt. We carried it forward.

That, to me, is one of the extraordinary truths of Indian civilisation. It survived not because it was untouched by history, but because it was capable of absorbing history without surrendering its identity.

That survival should not be confused with perfection. India's history contains conflict, injustice, conquest, accommodation, resistance, coexistence and enormous complexity. But through all of it, the civilisation endured.

And that is why I am careful when people speak about India as though 1947 was the moment India was born. India was not born in 1947. India became independent in 1947.

There is a profound difference.

And India's independence also cannot be separated from Partition. The celebration of freedom exists alongside one of the great human tragedies of the twentieth century—millions displaced, families separated, communities devastated, and memories of violence carried across generations. We should never sanitise that history. The price of freedom was not theoretical. Real people paid it.

When I think about 15 August, therefore, I think not only about famous leaders and historic speeches, but about ordinary people. People who sacrificed. People who endured. People who rebuilt their lives. People who carried their languages, traditions, memories and hopes into the next generation. And eventually, people who carried India across oceans.

I am one of those people.

India is where my story began. America is where my story continues.

I am Indian. I am American. And I have never understood why those identities should be presented as competing loyalties. Why should loving America require me to become less Indian? Why should loving India require me to be less American?

It shouldn't.

India gave me an inheritance. America gave me an opportunity. I carry both with pride.

My Indian identity does not make me less American, and my American citizenship does not make me less Indian. I do not have to erase my past to prove that I belong in my present.

BELONGING SHOULD NEVER REQUIRE ERASURE.

Living between cultures teaches you something that is difficult to understand from the outside: identity is not always a choice between A and B. Sometimes it is the ability to carry both. You can inherit one civilisation and build a life in another country. You can remember where you came from without refusing where you are. You can add to your identity without subtracting from it.

That is not divided loyalty.
That is a larger sense of belonging.

And perhaps that is why Independence Day makes me think so much about democracy. India's independence was fundamentally about self-determination—the right of a people to determine their own future. That principle did not become obsolete when the British left.

A people must remain free to preserve their inheritance, question their leaders, shape their institutions, and determine their future without being told that they must abandon who they are in order to belong.

That means freedom must include the freedom to question those who govern us. To disagree. To dissent. To organise. To worship—or not worship. To participate. To criticise. To demand accountability. And to tell the truth even when the truth is inconvenient to the people in power.

That is why I can love India and still question India. It is why I can love America and still question America.

Patriotism without truth becomes propaganda.
Patriotism without accountability becomes personality worship. Patriotism without freedom becomes coercion.

Loving a country should never mean surrendering your conscience to it.

India's civilisation also offers a lesson that I value deeply: pluralism does not require uniformity. India has held within itself different languages, philosophies, traditions, beliefs, customs and ways of understanding the world for centuries. That does not mean India's history has always been peaceful or that every difference has always been respected. It means something more interesting: India has repeatedly demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to live with complexity.

People can disagree profoundly and still share a civilisation. They can worship differently and still share a homeland. They can speak different languages and still belong to the same national story. Difference does not have to mean destruction (although that is exactly what Hindus faced for over a millennium).

That lesson matters everywhere. It matters in India. It matters in America. And it matters to me because I know what it means to carry one country inside you while building a life in another.

I don't want a perfect India. I don't want a perfect America.
I want countries strong enough to confront their failures, institutions strong enough to restrain power, citizens courageous enough to question authority, and societies confident enough to protect people who are different from themselves.

Because independence is not simply freedom from someone.
IT IS FREEDOM TO BECOME WHO YOU ARE.

And that freedom is never permanently secured simply because it was won once. Every generation inherits it. Every generation has to decide whether it will protect it, expand it, and pass it forward.

So today, I remember the freedom fighters. I remember the people whose lives were shattered by Partition. I honour the generations who rebuilt India. I honour the families who carried India beyond her borders. And I celebrate the millions of Indians around the world who continue to carry this extraordinary civilisation forward.

I celebrate India with pride, but also with honesty. With affection, but also with responsibility.

Because India is not simply where I came from.
India is part of how I learned to see the world.
And America is not simply where I live.
America is the country I have chosen to serve.

I do not see those truths as contradictory. They are the two parts of the story that made me who I am. And perhaps that is what independence means to me now—not simply that India once broke free from an empire, but that no generation should ever surrender its right to determine its own future.

A country is not the possession of its rulers. It belongs to its people. Its flag belongs to its people. Its history belongs to its people. And its future belongs to the generations brave enough to protect it.

Therefore, no matter how much hatred, discrimination, or harassment I face in America—no matter how many times I hear “Go back to India,” “You do not belong here,” or “You are not American”—I do not have to go back anywhere.

I carry India within me.

My heritage is Indian. My inheritance is Indian. My citizenship is American. America is my home. I do not have to become less Indian to prove that I am American, and no one gets to erase my heritage, my civilisation, or my belonging.

So today, I celebrate India—not because she is perfect, but because she is part of me. I celebrate the civilisation that formed me, the people who carried it forward, and the freedom that allowed a nation to reclaim its own destiny.

And wherever life takes me, I will carry that inheritance with me.
