The national debt is projected to cross $40 trillion any day now, and our Executive Director @CarolynConcord joined PBS @NewsHour to explain why that number should worry every American.
The U.S. national debt has officially surpassed $40 trillion, equal to nearly $117,000 for every person in America.
Neither Congress nor the President has a credible plan to stop it from growing. We owe the next generation better than a crushing debt and another hollow promise that someone else will deal with it later.

Fiscal responsibility has been a part of America's strength from the beginning when the founders agreed to consolidate state and federal debt and commit to repayment to establish the new nation's credit worthiness. We must continue that tradition for the generations to come.
We now pay more interest on the debt than we spend on defense.
This July 4th, what will we pass on to the next generation?

Reps Peters, Huizenga, and Smucker discussing strategies to Cut the Debt including a bipartisan fiscal commission and a target to cut the deficit in half.
For Congress to tackle the debt problem, it needs to set a goal. A broad consensus is developing around a goal to cut the deficit in half, from 6% to 3% of GDP. This will stabilize the overall debt to GDP ratio, which is approaching record high levels.
