The clearest case is journalist @bbmhlanga’s 79-day pretrial detention in 2025 for broadcasting interviews with war veteran Blessed Geza (the central figure of Report 04) — interviews whose content was never disputed as false, but which were nonetheless prosecuted as “incitement” under the Cyber and Data Protection Act. Zimbabwe’s High Court struck down the most extreme penalties in the Patriotic Act in June 2025, but the core vagueness — and the core prosecutorial pattern — survived the ruling intact.

The CDF Party that launched their movement through a sustained campaign of attacking OTHER opposition players and leaders - accusing them of not having what it takes, and of being apparently too ineffective against the ZANU PF Regime ... and said THEY were the new game in town, and the real deal that would fight ZANU's Constitutional Amendment Bill 3, tooth and nail.

Now they are saying that the reason they did absolutely NOTHING at all to stop the passing of CAB3, except give us some history lessons, post a few social media graphics and AI videos, attend a couple of Zim Embassy protests in the UK, and nothing else - is because ... ZANU PF are too brutal, unfair and lawless. 👀😏🤦🏾‍♂️

Every instrument this series has documented — FAZ's shadow structure, the chieftaincy's patronage, Sanyatwe's undisguised threat, Chivayo's philanthropist branding — depends on a fourth, unnamed instrument to survive scrutiny: a legal and media environment engineered to make clear description of what is happening a punishable act in itself.

Zimbabwe has built this environment through an accumulating stack of vaguely worded statutes — the 2021 Cyber and Data Protection Act, the 2023 "Patriotic Act," the 2025 Private Voluntary Organizations Amendment Act, and the 2025 Broadcasting Services Amendment Act — each criminalising some version of "false," "inciting," or "sovereignty-injuring" speech without ever defining the terms precisely enough to be predictable.
