We sequenced 139 complete mitogenomes from Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamil & Vedda populations, the largest such dataset from Sri Lanka so far.
Results support the southern dispersal route out of Africa via South Asia.

#CCMB #Hyderabad, India’s premier research institute. It was the visionary decision of its Director, #DrLaljiSingh, that laid the foundation for an entire generation of #DNA scientists in India. I feel proud to be one of the trees that grew from the seeds he planted.
He signed MoUs with colleges and schools across remote parts of the country where research facilities were almost non-existent. Students from these institutions would come carrying blood samples and return after learning the intricacies of DNA technology. This initiative led to the creation of a massive #DNAbank at CCMB, which became the backbone of several landmark research studies.
However, training such a large influx of students was a daunting task. Most of them had never even held a pipette before.
This challenging responsibility was carried out with exceptional dedication and excellence by #ShriAGReddy Sir. With immense patience and commitment, he trained every single student, teaching them the fine nuances of DNA techniques. It is because of his efforts that the legacy of “W 410” has spread not only across India but also abroad. Every researcher who worked at CCMB under his guidance left as a skilled and confident DNA technologist.
Today, when Sir visited #GyanLab, he paused before Dr. Lalji Singh’s photograph and emotionally said,
“This should be everywhere.”
I asked him,
“Sir, your students are now working all over the world. How does it feel?”
With great humility, he replied:
“I only did my duty. I taught everyone with the same affection and equality.”
The land of India has always flourished because of such unsung heroes.
Gyan Lab is deeply grateful to Sir for his selfless guidance and wishes him a long, healthy, and blessed life.

सीसीएमबी हैदराबाद: भारत का अग्रणी शोध संस्थान। डॉ. लालजी सिंह के दूरदर्शी निर्णय ने पूरे देश में डीएनए विज्ञानियों की एक पूरी पीढ़ी खड़ी कर दी। मुझे गर्व है कि मैं भी उसी वृक्ष की एक शाखा हूँ।
उन्होंने देश के कोने-कोने के उन कॉलेजों और विद्यालयों से एमओयू किए, जहाँ शोध की सुविधाएँ लगभग न के बराबर थीं। वहाँ के विद्यार्थी ब्लड सैंपल लेकर आते और यहाँ डीएनए की बारीकियाँ सीखकर लौटते। इसी पहल से सीसीएमबी में एक विशाल डीएनए बैंक तैयार हुआ, जिसके आधार पर अनेक ऐतिहासिक शोध कार्य संपन्न हुए।
परंतु इतनी बड़ी संख्या में आने वाले विद्यार्थियों को प्रशिक्षित करना आसान नहीं था। अधिकांश विद्यार्थी ऐसे थे जिन्होंने पहले कभी पिपेट तक नहीं थामा था।
इस चुनौतीपूर्ण कार्य को बड़े समर्पण और कुशलता से पूरा किया श्री ए.जी. रेड्डी सर ने। सर ने हर विद्यार्थी को एक-एक करके, अथक धैर्य और तन्मयता से प्रशिक्षित किया। उनके मार्गदर्शन से ‘W 410’ की पौध न केवल भारत, बल्कि विदेशों में भी छा गई। सीसीएमबी से निकलने वाला हर विद्यार्थी डीएनए तकनीकों का निपुण ज्ञाता बनकर निकलता था।
आज जब सर ज्ञान लैब आए, तो सबसे पहले डॉ. लालजी सिंह की तस्वीर देखकर भावुक होकर बोले,
“इसे हर जगह होना चाहिए।”
मैंने पूछा,
“सर, आपके शिष्य आज पूरी दुनिया में फैले हैं, कैसा लगता है?”
बड़ी विनम्रता से उन्होंने जवाब दिया,
“मैंने तो बस अपनी ड्यूटी निभाई। सबको एक समान नजर से देखा और सिखाया।”
भारत भूमि ऐसे ही अनगिनत गुमनाम हीरोज से महकती रही है।
ज्ञान लैब, सर के इस स्नेहपूर्ण मार्गदर्शन के लिए हृदय से आभारी है और उनके स्वस्थ एवं दीर्घायु जीवन की कामना करता है।
