@jzpitts story telling is the first expression of magic for ancient people. What the storyteller told wasn't just entertainment, it was history, science, philosophy, mysticism, horror and prophecy. Modern storytellers use it the same today.
@jzpitts Show where the flaws originated -- what makes the bad guy bad. Let the reader understand what brought him/her to the point where your story happens. Bad people aren't born bad; they are bad through nurture (or lack of it) not nature. Don't make him too nice though.
@ShahTheWanderer @jzpitts It's been my experience the story and the character appear together. Then the weaving begins! Both of your questions are applicable to fiction writing and I don't think one is often singularly applied when writing.

@jzpitts Shamelessly use your family, friends and co-workers - anyone you see often enough to know their habits, personalities, interests, annoying mannerisms, etc. You know THEM and they are all different so you are using them to make fresh characters with their own traits.
@jens2go I'm sure the theory will read,
"a lost race of humans only 1/4 inch tall were made extinct from a giant flood! No bones yet found, although researches continue to explore beaches.?
@jzpitts No, I move around but my concept of 'race' is human or alien, demon or angel, fairy or elf. Human is never defined by skin color in any of my writings. Individuals have some identifiers, but skin color is never addressed alone.
@jzpitts depends upon the story you are telling. rule of thumb, have your main character be a couple of years older than your intended audience. this is particularly true with school age readers.
@jzpitts Hemingway had the answer - work for a newspaper (in the newsroom-not from home) for no more than 18 months. Meeting a daily deadline is a good habit to develop.
