Fernando Hierro
1,956 years ago today, a Roman general named Titus shattered the second wall of Jerusalem and learned, within hours, that he had walked into a slaughter.
The siege had begun in early spring. Titus, the 30 year old son of Emperor Vespasian, had marched four legions to the walls of Jerusalem to end the Jewish revolt that had embarrassed Rome for four years. Inside the city, factions of zealots had already torn through their own granaries in street fights, leaving the population starving before a single Roman ram had touched the gate. Refugees crucified by the Romans outside the walls were so numerous that Josephus wrote there was no more wood for crosses and no more room for the crosses on the ground.
Titus brought the largest siege train Rome had assembled in a generation. By mid May his rams had cracked the third and outermost wall. On May 30, after only four days of battering, the second wall fell as well. Roman soldiers poured through the breach expecting to find a broken city.
What they found instead was a trap. The streets of the New City beyond the wall were a warren of narrow alleys, blind corners, and overhanging roofs. The Jewish defenders, led by the rebel commander John of Gischala, let the legionaries advance deep into the maze before falling on them from windows, balconies, and rooftops with javelins, stones, and burning oil. Roman armor was useless in the close quarters. Men in heavy mail were stabbed in the throat from above and left to bleed out in the gutters.
Titus, watching from outside, was forced to order a full retreat. The legionaries scrambled back through the breach they had just won, and the defenders chased them all the way to the rubble. The Romans took heavier casualties on May 30 than on any other single day of the siege.
It took Titus three more days to retake the wall, and this time he tore the breach wide and leveled the houses behind it so no second ambush was possible. The First Wall, the Antonia Fortress, and the Temple Mount still stood. Inside, hundreds of thousands of civilians were now trapped without grain.
Four months later, on the 9th of Av by the Jewish calendar, the Second Temple was burning. Josephus counted 1.1 million dead and 97,000 enslaved. The diaspora that would shape Jewish history for the next 1,878 years began on the road out of the smoking city.
The arch that Titus's brother Domitian built in Rome to celebrate the victory still stands in the Forum. The relief inside it shows Roman soldiers carrying the menorah of the Temple in triumph through the streets of the capital.
@RomeInTheEast My only criticism is that Justinian focused too much on the West instead of consolidating the eastern frontier against Persia, which was the real threat. Even so, his reforms especially the Corpus Juris Civilis were a brilliant achievement and the foundation of modern law.
