“I'm Afraid of Americans” was written by David Bowie and Brian Eno and originally recorded during the sessions for Bowie's 1995 album Outside. An early version with different lyrics and the protagonist named “Dummy,” eventually appeared on the Showgirls soundtrack. Bowie later reworked the song during the sessions for Earthling (1997), rewriting parts of the lyrics and transforming it into a darker, more industrial-sounding track.

The song became closely associated with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails after Bowie and Reznor became friends while touring together on the Outside Tour. Reznor and members of Nine Inch Nails created several remixes for the song's 1997 single release, giving it an even heavier industrial edge. Reznor also starred in the music video as Johnny, an aggressive figure who stalks Bowie through the streets of New York. “I'm Afraid of Americans” reached No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Bowie's highest-charting US single in a decade.
