I think this is why it's important to work on a project you're extremely proud of at least once in your career. So many artists spend their careers living in this void of detachment that they get jaded & numb to the whole process. We forget why we got started in this industry in the first place.

I still get a feeling of pride & accomplishment whenever I reflect back on some of my favorite projects. A sense of gratitude like "man I really got to work on that." Even if it was just a flash in the pan, that sense of pride will last me my entire career.

With the spread of all this misinformation, please allow me this opportunity to share some lesser known FACTS about the Haitian people. You'd be surprised how much American history & Haitian history are intertwined, much more than you were ever taught in school.

Haitians have always been some of the most resilient people, dating back to their independence in 1804. They became the world's first free black republic after defeating their colonizer France & concurring their highly acclaimed, highly touted, war general Napoleon Bonaparte in the Haitian Revolutionary war.

France responded to their defeat by sending warships over to Haiti and demanding 150 million Francs (about $21 billion now) as reparations for their "Lost Property" aka slaves. Yes, the French wanted the FORMER SLAVES to pay reparations to their SLAVE OWNERS.

Haiti was forced to pay France in part due to the threat of being bombed but also through the pressure of the United States. Threatening to enact a trade embargo on the newly independent country if they didn't pay.

You see, because the United State's economy at the time was so deeply rooted in slave labor they saw Haiti's new found independence as a threat to their way of life. So America got with all the other white countries and agreed that they wouldn't even acknowledge Haiti. Word spreading of a successful slave revolt would be bad for business.

At this time Haiti was one of the richest colonies in the America’s through major exports of coffee & sugar. But the price France was asking for in reparations was 6 times their Annual GDP. Haitians were face with a choice, if they didn't pay France back, the rest of the world wouldn't recognize them or trade with them. If they did, they'd be broke....They decided to go with the latter. At one point, 80 percent of the Haitian Economy was spent on servicing that debt to France. If you ever wondered why Haiti is so poor, it all starts here.

But Haiti couldn't pay the enormous sum of reparations owed in full, so they were forced to take out a loan from the world bank just so it could make its first payment. But that only added to the burden, after interest and commissions for French bankers. This became known as Haiti's "double debt." A debt that was eventually bought by a bank in the United States. A bank known today as Citi Bank.

In 1914 American forces would eventually occupy Haiti & ruled over the country with brute force for 19 years, one of the longest military occupations in American history. During that time American soldiers took $500,000 in gold from Haiti's central bank back to the Americas for "safekeeping." The gold was in the vault of Citi bank within days. Haiti would never see that money again. The US would take political and financial control, often giving out bad loans to the country at the cost of Haiti’s future and making Citibank untold billions richer in return.

Thats not the only time the exploitation of Haiti directly benefited the United States. Because of the huge loss France suffered during the Haitian Revolution, France no longer felt confident that they could defend their territory in the Americas. France wanted out of the New World. They decided to sell their land to the US which would become the LOUISIANA PURCHASE which is widely regarded as one of the biggest & most profitable real estate returns on investment ever made, it doubled the size of the US overnight.

Theres so many more examples like this through out Haiti's history. It's easy to see the tip of an iceberg & draw shortsighted conclusions. Doing so without taking into consideration the many years of history that got us here is naive & narrow-minded. You can't look at the problem without acknowledging the role we've (the United States) played in it. Whether thats misinformation or the reality of the situation, we continue to play a role in perpetuating the problem.

In the last several weeks, my office has received many inquiries from actual residents of Springfield who've said their neighbors' pets or local wildlife were abducted by Haitian migrants. It's possible, of course, that all of these rumors will turn out to be false.

Do you know what's confirmed? That a child was murdered by a Haitian migrant who had no right to be here. That local health services have been overwhelmed. That communicable diseases--like TB and HIV--have been on the rise. That local schools have struggled to keep up with newcomers who don't know English. That rents have risen so fast that many Springfield families can't afford to put a roof over their head.

If you're a reporter, or an activist, who didn't give a shit about these suffering Americans until yesterday, I have some advice:

Spare your outrage for your fellow citizens suffering under Kamala Harris's policies. Be outraged at yourself for letting this happen.

Love how the weather forecast for next week is the complete opposite of this map. Those who made plans based off of historical data (myself included) are worried right now.

Yeah I'm in the animation industry, I have read this book & I can confidently say this does not teach you 90% of what you need to know. This is like saying Phil Knight's book Shoe Dog teaches you 90% of what you need to know about the footwear industry. "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams or "The Illusion of Life" by Disney Animators Ollie Johnston & Frank Thomas is widely regarded as the go to recommended book in our industry. Even still I doubt you can capture 90% of any industry in one book alone.

@SashaLaundy @sophianegativa Got it! When you explain it like that it makes sense. It’s good to know the behind the scenes working because I definitely am married to Notion now. It’s an upgrade to my previous workflow & I’m hoping that I won’t have to leave in the future. Thanks again for the explanation

There are alot of benefits that I could go on about for days but the biggest benefit for me has to be bi-directional linking (backlinks) which Evernote doesn't have. Backlinking allows you to create direct connections between related notes in both directions. This is extremely helpful in allowing you to cross-pollinate notes or docs instead of them being siloed from each other. This is an invaluable workflow when you start managing a lot of notes or docs.

Notion also has sync blocks, which allows you to create a block of text thats visible & syncs in multiple places. If you have a single piece of information that is relevant in multiple locations all you have to do is update the sync block & it's reflective in all the locations you have it synced.

@sophianegativa @Jarsen In my opinion Notion is worth the curve. I picked it up a year ago after using Evernote for over a decade & I honestly wish I would have picked it up sooner.

If everybody could be an athlete overnight would watching sports be more or less compelling?

Performance-enhancing drugs are banned in sports which makes you think.

If the goal is to preserve the integrity of sports, why aren't we trying to preserve the integrity of humanity?

@ECAbrams Wow, this is news to me. I've heard it mentioned in passing as a "here me out" joke, but never thought it would actually exist. Poses a lot of health risks I'm assuming.
