Deputy British Ambassador to The Netherlands. Most recently in Ukraine. Previous postings include Russia, USA, Mauritius. Proud Scot. History enthusiast.
Great day in beautiful #Apeldoorn meeting Mayor Heerts @ the Commanding Officer of the @Marechaussee Willem III Kazerne, Colonel Arends. Excellent discussion with both. The Koninklijke Marechaussee is a valued partner for UK law enforcement, border security & more @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
WWII veterans will have their travel overseas for Normandy and Arnhem commemorations covered by the government.
First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins told @GBNEWS that the funding would demonstrate โhow importantโ veterans are to British society.

Excellent meeting with Energy Infrastructure & Nuclear Issues Minister Jo-Annes de Bat. As North Sea Neighbours, the UK & the Netherlands are already close partners on energy. We look forward to developing this on nuclear and SMRs @ukinnl@energygovuk@stas_kgg ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
Memorable 4-5 May commemorations & celebrations in the Netherlands with our wonderful British veterans, the youngest 99 and eldest 103 years old. Thank you to all who made this possible especially the fantastic Taxi Charity. Look forward to seeing you in September @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
Always good to see Burgemeester Bruls of #Nijmegen - we caught up on the Radboud/Glasgow university partnership, UK interests in the strong semiconductor cluster, migration and of course plans for the Battle of Nijmegen commemorations in September @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
Delighted to be at Radboud University Nijmegen today to hear about the exciting strategic partnership between Radboud and the University of Glasgow. Established in 2018 and going from strength to strength with new & innovative joint research projects @ukinnl@UofGlasgow ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ
I am in #Nijmegen today and paid my respects to those who rest at Jonkerbos war cemetery, including many who were killed in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Nijmegen. Beautifully maintained by @CWGC and partners. @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
What a beautiful evening at historic Hotel de Wereld, Wageningen as we remembered those who were killed during the Second World War then watched as the Flame of Freedom was lit in the presence of incredible veterans including 103 year old Robbie Hall @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
On this ๐ณ๐ฑ National Remembrance Day, I joined the Mayor of #Vught & the local community to remember & honour the many victims of Kamp Vught, the Nazi concentration and transportation camp. We walked slowly through the forest to the monument and stood in silence. @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง
On the ๐ณ๐ฑ National Day of Remembrance, honoured to join Mayor Buma, @AusAmbNL the local community & family members as we remember the seven aircrew of RAF Halifax W1220 that crashed near #Jelsum in 1942. All seven British & Australian crew members were killed @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ ๐ฆ๐บ
Always good to see Burgemeester Buma in #Leeuwarden - I congratulated him on his appointment as Vice President of the Raad van State in The Hague. Iโve greatly valued my regular discussions with him in Leeuwarden & look forward to continuing this in his new role @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
An honour to welcome our wonderful British veterans to the Netherlands for the 4-5 May commemorations. First stop is Bronbeek, the Royal Military Home for Veterans. Thank you @Defensie@Politie@Marechaussee & the amazing @TaxiCharity for making this happen - @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
One of my favourite cities in the Netherlands, #Deventer on the IJssel. Much of the iconic 1977 movie A Bridge Too Far, telling the story of the Battle of Arnhem, was filmed in Deventer as the Wilhelmina Bridge closely resembled the Arnhem Rhine Bridge in 1944. @ukinnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
Final stop on this beautiful week in Groningen & Friesland provinces is Holwerd in north Friesland where five aircrew rest, one British and four from New Zealand. @ukinnl@CWGC ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ ๐ณ๐ฟ
I first visited Wierum three years ago. This small village in north Friesland is situated right under the dyke & many sailors from the village have been lost to the sea. Three airmen from the Second World War, two Canadian and one British, rest there @ukinnl@CWGC ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ ๐จ๐ฆ
The beautiful village of #Ternaard in north Friesland where 5 aircrew rest and are remembered, three British, one Canadian and one unknown. @ukinnl@CWGC@ogsnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ ๐จ๐ฆ
Sometimes a family chooses to fund a private memorial rather than the traditional @CWGC headstone. This one in the village of #Uithuizen remembers RAF pilot Bill Pryor who was just 21 years old when killed in August 1940. An only child whose loss was clear @ukinnl@ogsnl ๐ฌ๐ง ๐ณ๐ฑ
A bell with history, humour and meaning. ๐๐ฌ๐ง๐บ๐ธ
At the White House State Dinner, His Majesty King Charles III presented President Trump with the original bell from HMS Trump, a British submarine launched in 1944 during the Second World War.
Once hung on the submarineโs conning tower, the polished brass bell stands as a reminder of our nationsโ shared wartime history and enduring alliance.
As His Majesty said: โMay it stand as a testimony to our nationsโ shared history and shining future. And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring!โ
From history to partnership, the UK/US relationship continues to ring true.
