Harry Colt found the site for the clubhouse the routed the course from there. Inspired decision. One of the game’s best routings that uses some awkward terrain for two of the heathlands best par 3’s… 8&11.

Immediately before @hscoltproject influenced the direction of @Royadublin1 the course was commandeered by the British Army as a training ground for musketry etc. this is a, to scale, war office drawing of the course during the Great War. Pic credit @IRLDeptDefence archives⛳️

This was the original 17th on @hscoltproject No 2 Course at St George’s Hill. It follows the routing from 1929 but B Darwin’s description varies slightly from what’s there now…

The characteristics required of a hazard are:

1) that it should be difficult, but not impossible, to play out of.

2) It should not be a cause of lost balls.

3) Strokes played out of it should depend for their success on skill & not on brute force alone.

In 1905, Harry Colt @hscoltproject received his first paid commission @GantonGC This was after Rye, Worlington, Sunningdale Heath, Folkestone, Limpsfield Chart, Hastings & St Leonard. 🤯 The 17th at Ganton in circa 1910 below.

Dr Alister Mackenzie wrote: ‘I am convinced if Harry Colt @hscoltproject had been allowed a free hand at Sunningdale it would have been an even more interesting course than it is.’ Tarrant gave him a free hand @StGeorgesHillGC & the results were sensational! Below, the 4th 👇🏻

Alister MacKenzie wrote that Park Jr’s @Sunningdale_GC Old Course was changed from ‘dull, insipid and tedious’ by @hscoltproject into ‘inspired, strategic and interesting’. 😬 WP Jr died in ‘25 and Dr Mac wrote that in ‘33… the famous 10th before Colt’s changes.

1913 was a particularly good year for Harry Colt… in addition to his work @StGeorgesHillGC he was busy collaborating with JF Abercromby @TheAddingtonGC
