🫖 Pro tip: track how much caffeine you consume and know the general guidelines for how much you can safely consume each day. Fix your sleep and your diet and you may find you don’t need as much caffeine throughout the day!
🧠 While caffeine can help with focus and feeling energized. Caffeine doesn’t actually provide us any energy. It blocks the effects of the neurotransmitter that promotes sleepiness.
🙅🏼♀️In high amounts, caffeine is considered a banned substance by the NCAA. Staying within the recommended daily guidelines is important for your health and potentially your playing time for higher level athletes.
🧃Replenish-
Drink 16-24oz of fluids for every pound lost during activity. Have fluids with electrolytes to replenish what was lost through sweat. Drinking fluids help with every aspect of recovery!
🥛 Pro tip: chocolate milk is a great post activity drink to add to your meal.
We’ve gone over pre-practice fueling now what about after practice?
🍽️ There’s three main goals we want to focus on when building a post practice snack or meal. Refuel with carbs, repair with protein and replenish with fluids!
Eating carbs will help your body start recovering from your practice and start preparing for the next one!
🍗 Repair-
Eating protein post activity helps rebuild and repair your muscles. Everyone’s needs are different, but it’s a good idea to aim for 20-30 grams of protein.
Try having a GoGo squeeze or fruit juice! They even make a GoGo squeeze version with electrolytes which is great to help with hydration. (And no an energy drink doesn’t count as pre practice fuel!)
Let’s talk pre-practice fueling.
Eating something before practice and games is key for better performance. It gives you more energy and protects those muscles you’ve worked so hard to build!
Eating protein and fat is important in your overall diet but can upset your stomach during activity since your body takes longer to digest them.
🥤Pro tip: for early morning work outs or if you feel like you can’t eat before high intensity activities.
Your body will start to break down muscle mass for energy if you’re not giving it fuel before you start!
⏰ We want to eat a snack 30-60 minutes before practice. This gives your body time to break down what you eat and use the glucose (or sugar) in the food for energy.
Close to home reminder of why we have lightning safety policies in place. If you see lightning or hear thunder get to your safe place. OK to return after 30min after the last seen lightning or heard thunder.
