Last month, my husband and I needed to travel from Abuja to Kaduna for a wedding. Knowing how difficult it can be, we were on the NRC booking platform exactly at 12:00 AM, two days before the trip. Almost instantly, the system kept returning "seat not available." We quickly switched from our phones to a laptop and, thankfully, managed to book our tickets. By 12:30 AM, the entire train was "sold out."

We felt lucky, until we actually boarded the train.

To my absolute surprise, there were rows of empty seats. What does this mean? People are aggressively hoarding and booking these tickets just to scalp them at ridiculous prices. When they fail to find desperate buyers, the seats travel empty. They are literally denying genuine commuters the opportunity to travel safely and comfortably, just to make a quick buck.

A few days later, I even saw someone confidently advertising their "ticket booking service" online. The effrontery

We constantly demand better infrastructure and systems, but when we get them, the first instinct for some is to game the system and weaponize it against fellow citizens. It’s not just a governance issue; it’s a massive failure of empathy. We really need to do better.
