right, right … [ sighing ] just trying to get to the heart of things here. sounds pretty scary for those kids — are their parents with them now?
[ blink, blink. ] wait, riley?
⠀
(snapping at him just a bit.)
I’m being serious! What about me isn’t serious!
…(sigh.)
One child sprained her leg, another got a burn and some bruises, and Riley’s arm got a nasty gash in it.
(and him, nothing. he waits for roark to start shouting.)
⠀
dad, [ a sigh. he throws up his hands, shaking his head. ] be— … be /serious/ alright? stop shrugging things off.
I’ll handle things on my end. who else got hurt?
⠀
I’m perfectly *fine*, and all other injuries were minor and taken care of. Mind your business. If I caused trouble for you, well, handle it. Hmph! Like you’ve never had to deal with an absence of mine before!

I genuinely love the byron Roark episode for other reasons because it’s fun and stupid but I HATE the message. I hate that it came out without consequences and I hate that it tells its audience to roll with the absence

Like…. Roark suddenly changed his perspective because his dad kept his first fossil he found? it’s sooo silly. It’s bull. It doesn’t make up for anything!!! It’s nice but it doesn’t take responsibility for deadbeat behaviour that he SHOULD be mad about. And challenge
@ST33LH3ART critical but uplifting. and he really appreciates it, it’s something he can take security in and take to heart. Also I just realised I said plays down the truth I meant **doesn’t play down the truth
GAMBIt**
no one is there for roark and at the same time everyone is there for roark. it’s so insane. it happens. it’s so sad. his coworkers love him and boost him and just confidence but he’s at the top of all that but has no one who can give him advice. isn’t it lonely
@ST33LH3ART I have to wonder (why) riley and roark are friends outside of his dad and him having met. because it’s clear roark has a really deep appreciation and clear respect for riley and I wonder if it’s because he’s one of the only people who plays down the truth and can be &.

[ he wants to say something reassuring— call it the leader duties, something said to leave with beginner challengers. but he doesn’t. it’s a matter of the heart. he spots the falter in her tone, and doesn’t know how to go about it. ]
⠀
⠀
[ damn it, really! it sucks. he wants to assure her, but doesn’t know how— she’s a therapist!
but he can relate. probably more than he could intrude on. it sucks, and it’s hard. and you move on. maybe she feels the same way. he laughs— light, after her chuckle. ]

@coolbugtypes GAMBIT**
It’s a reference to when spiders feel like being evil and they fall off the ceiling. Just kidding it’s so cute actually. he’s so big
⠀
you might get it, in a sense. it’s rough. you—-… I don’t really know you. sorry. I really don’t want to just, you know— [ gestures ] unload. it’s not fair. it’s not right.
even if you’re used to it. I don’t want to do that to you.
⠀
⠀
[ a sobering slap to reality. his fists unfurl, eyes wide. ]
you don’t feel lonely—? with the title of your dad lording over you, I mean.
[ he’s prideful in his own way, but not like others. when he spots what he says, roark sighs, rubbing his nose. ]
I think &.
