#OTD in 1944 the Maly Trostenets Concentration Camp was burned to the ground in an attempt to eliminate evidence of its existence. From 1942 to 1944 thousands of Jews were murdered and some 34 grave-pits were dug.

The analysis of the surviving documents makes it possible to trace how the centralized concentration camp system functioned, while, on the other hand, it also shows various aspects of the functioning of the German Nazi camp & its garrison.

One example is the correspondence concerning the attempt to transfer 30 women prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses, from Ravensbrück to Auschwitz, who were to be employed as domestic helpers in the homes of SS men.

27 June 1943 | A boy was born in the female camp in Auschwitz II-Birkenau. His name was Jerzy Homik, he was Polish. This is the first case outside of the #Zigeunerlager that a newborn child was registered in Auschwitz. He received number 155909. 1/2

#OTD in 1941 a pogrom in Kovno was carried out. Synagogues and homes were vandalized and some 800 Jews were murdered.

#OTD in 1944 this staged photo of Jewish children playing in the Theresienstadt ghetto was taken. It was used as propaganda by the Nazis during an inspection by the International Red Cross.

In May/June 1939 Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus traveled to Austrian and rescued 50 Jewish children. The children were brought to the US in hopes that their families would soon follow. Many sadly were never reunited.

#OTD in 1942 Jews from Hanau, Germany were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto in present day Czech Republic.

#OTD in 1930 Lida Kleinman was born in Krakow Poland. The family relocated to Turka nad Stryjem during World War II. Lida survived the war in hiding, first in a hospital bathroom stall and then later in a Catholic orphanage.

#OTD in 1936 Cecile Mendelsohn was born in Paris where her parents had fled to escape the Nazis. She survived the Holocaust in hiding from the help of an anti-Nazi German who her mother had tutored in French.

#OTD in 1933 the burning of "un-German" books took place across Germany in 34 university towns. Many of the books burned were from prominent Jewish writers. These demonstrations stood as a powerful symbol of Nazi intolerance and censorship.

Oskar Schindler was born on April 28, 1908. Pictured here are Holocaust survivors saved by Schindler along with individuals from the "Schindler's List" movie, standing next to his grave in Jerusalem. Oskar Schindler was responsible for saving the lives of 1,200 Jews and in 1993 he was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. Today, there are 8,000+ living descendants of the Jews saved by Oskar Schindler.
