Unfortunately this will prove to be much worse than just a waste of time. ISIS terrorists headed to Africa because that’s where their leadership is now located.
"At the al-Hol displaced persons camp, as many as 20,000 residents—including thousands of ISIS family members and affiliates—departed unmonitored, most under the watch of Syrian government forces." - Inspector General report

#NEW: U.S. intelligence assesses that ISIS is likely to use the escape and release of thousands of detainees and affiliates from prisons and camps in Syria to rebuild its ranks, expand support networks, and raise funds. A U.S. report to Congress also cites an assessment that ISIS in Syria is among the branches most likely to plot external terrorist attacks. The UN estimates roughly 3,000 ISIS fighters remain active across Syria and Iraq.
Some 5,000 foreign fighters who helped topple former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime are still under arms in Syria. The government’s approach has generated a host of anxieties. https://t.co/F5N2q2CSBX
This is probably a long shot, but if anybody happens to be in DC this weekend and plans on visiting Arlington, I would love to see a fresh photo of my husband’s grave in Section 60.

Big update on Australians previously held in Roj camp in Syria: four women and nine children returned to Australia, three of the women were arrested on arrival: https://t.co/2zLzdNan83
As I mentioned in this piece, it remained unclear what happened to some of the FTFs not transferred to Iraq. Shafaq News is now reporting the US-led Coalition kept 400 ISIS detainees at Sina'a prison in northeastern Syria's Hasakah city, including Syrians, Iraqis, & TCNs.
A group of Australian women and children who left a camp in Syria that houses people with alleged ties to Islamic State group militants are stuck in the country because Australian authorities have refused to allow their return, Syrian officials said Wednesday. https://t.co/aE9cV62Dz3
Excited to share a new piece I have out in @CTCWP looking at the collapse of the indefinite detention system in Northeast Syria that held Islamic State fighters and their families, and implications, seven years later for Syria and beyond:

4 Australian women and 9 children with links to former #ISIS fighters have left Al-Roj camp in #Syria.
- They were issued Australian passports and hope to return home, but the government has confirmed it is not actively repatriating them.
- “The Australian government is not repatriating those people,” Deputy PM Richard Marles said.
- This is the second attempt after a group of 34 Australians was blocked by Syrian forces earlier this year.
- The camp co-ordinator said a security procedure (up to 72 hours) is underway before they are deported.
- Only one of the women faces a temporary entry ban.
- 11 other women and children from #Australia remain in the camp with no current return plans.

"Six of the ten countries most impacted by terrorism are in sub-Saharan Africa, now the global epicenter of terrorism," according to the Global Terrorism Index. https://t.co/N2ayl9sos7
"A French lawyer is seeking the repatriation of an ISIS follower’s two orphaned children, who are still detained in Al Roj camp in north-east Syria. Their French mother, died recently of illness in the camp, leaving behind two girls aged nine and 11, and is the third French woman to die in a camp since the collapse of ISIS in 2019." https://t.co/U54hCBjr8I
