It's a vibe shift: Gen Z are increasing their consumption of beef.
For example, here is part of the meat counter in a small supermarket a few minutes walk from the campus of a top-100 university.
It sells more than 250kg of beef short rib every week, growing at a steady 20% per month.
Also popular and growing: rib-eye, oxtail.
The buyers? Mostly Gen Z students. More male than female but female numbers growing.
Why? The digital generation do their own research online and can find:
1. That beef is nutrient-dense and is high-quality protein.
2. That the scare stories (such as meat and cancer) were just that.
3. Even better, the ones doing science degrees know what a "weak observational study" is (it's what the dietitians' scare stories are based on) and they educate their housemates.
4. Young women educate friends about the benefits of iron, B12, etc.
