I PAID FOR THE STRONGEST MODEL ON THE MARKET AND IT STILL COULDN'T SEE A BUG MY CUSTOMERS WERE REPORTING EVERY SINGLE DAY
I set up an agent to go through every support ticket each friday and write me one report: what are customers actually angry about
for two months it was perfect. sharp, specific, ranked. then we grew, tickets went from 200 a week to 1,200, and the report started reading like a horoscope
"users want a smoother experience." "some friction around billing." "overall sentiment is mixed"
no crash. no warning. every run finished green
meanwhile refunds had been silently failing for weeks. dozens of tickets about it. my agent read every single one and still couldn't see it
I did everything you're supposed to do. moved it to the most expensive model available. rewrote the prompt twice. added examples of what a good report looks like. told it to be specific, to rank by severity, to quote customers directly
every fix made the report longer. none of them made it sharper. I was paying more every week for an agent that was getting worse at its one job
then I read this article and one paragraph stopped me cold. the author hit the exact same wall on a thousand-file run: the wider it got, the vaguer the answer, and not a single error to point at
the problem was never the model or the prompt. it was the shape. I was pouring 1,200 raw tickets into one final step and asking it to hold all of them at once. no model fixes that, because nothing was ever built to hold that much
the fix took one evening
batch the tickets into groups of 40. summarize each batch separately. write the final report from the summaries, never from the raw pile
then group every complaint by category instead of reading them as a flat list. three hundred angry tickets stopped being three hundred problems. they collapsed into five causes, and one of them had "refund" written all over it
first report after the change named the refund bug in the second line
most people try to fix a failing agent by paying for a smarter model. almost nobody checks whether the last step can even read what they gave it
I spent weeks chasing the crime scene. the article showed me where the crime was
