i want to say something about Turkey that most analysts are afraid to say.
Erdoğan made a mistake.
not a moral mistake. a strategic one.
when he put İmamoğlu in Silivri in March 2025, he thought he was removing his most dangerous opponent from the game. that is how it has always worked. jail them, discredit them, replace them. the playbook has worked for 23 years.
well, it is not working this time.
İmamoğlu did not disappear. he became a symbol. the protests that followed his arrest were the largest Turkey had seen in over a decade. the opposition did not collapse. it rebuilt itself around him. a new party, constructed while he sat in a cell, is now the second largest in parliament.
a man in Silivri prison is reshaping Turkish politics more effectively than most free politicians reshape anything.
and Erdoğan knows it.
watch how the trials are being handled. three hearings scheduled on the same day. İmamoğlu thrown out of his own courtroom. the court recording that he chose to remain silent when he said no such thing.
this is not the behavior of a system that is confident.
this is the behavior of a system that is afraid of what happens if he actually gets to speak.
2028 is two years away.
and for the first time in a very long time, the outcome is genuinely uncertain.
