PCR, epigenetics and electrophoresis. Fantastically informative day at Southampton Hospital with Yr 13 Biologists. Thank you @LifelabSoton for another brilliant day of activities.
Thank you to the bioimaging department at Southampton for another fantastic tour. The confocal microscope in picture allowed us to see cells in a very different light!
From September our Biology and Physics departments will be joining us right here on this account. We've therefore renamed this account to Highcliffe Science! Look out for lots of exciting content to come in the new term! #Science 🧬 🧪 🔬 🧠
Mrs Barrett has honoured her final lesson with year 12 this year with the annual chemistry awards! Well done 12Ch1B you have been amazing, keep going with the hard work and it will all pay off!
Another required practical done. Chromatography, which is used to separate mixtures, to analyse reactions and to check purity of products. Today our year 10's used this technique like experts and found out what was in our unknown ink. #chromatography#aqa#reqprac#C8analysis
We have been recapping C2 with year 10 double award chemists. At the end of the lesson this is what they summarised to be the most important parts of the bonding topic. I could hardly keep up writing whilst they told me what they knew! #thenamesbondionicbond#myclassarehilarious
Challenged the year 10 separate chemists to do some of the hard calculations from the C3 unit in preparation for their end of year mock. They did not disappoint! How amazing is this piece of collaboration! Some definite future chemists here. Well done! #collaborate#mathsinchem
We were really lucky to have the @RoySocChem and @UniOfSoton come and deliver their brilliant spectroscopy in a suitcase workshop today. Not only did students see and try out using a spectrometer but they had a masterclass from two PhD students. Thank you!
Year 8 were investigating how carbon dioxide from millions of years ago has been trapped in the rocks of today. They reacted the rocks with acid and captured the gas given off in a balloon and then tested it with limewater. This could have been carbon dioxide from #dinosaurbreath
Testing for the products of combustion using limewater and cobalt paper. Top picture shows start point and bottom shows our positive results for water and carbon dioxide. #evidence#justifyingconclusion#provingtheory
Always feel so proud of my students when I look back through their books and see how far they have come on their chemistry journey. This is just one example of how much work ONE student did to review our c4-chemical changes topic. Amazing work! #marking
