🇵🇭Oldest Philippines Inscription Rewrites History
1986 Discovery: Indian script 5,500 km away

Called "uncivilized" before Spain colonized in 1521, an accidental find of an inscribed crumpled plate reveals Philippines civilization well before 900 AD and India's influence. 🧵:

🏝️Discovery
1⃣In 1986, during Laguna de Bay dredging (~90 km from Manila), workers found two black plates with fine characters. After failed attempts to sell it in Antiques market, one plate was offered to the Philippines National Museum, which acquired it in 1990.
2⃣Tests showed it was oxidized copper with inscriptions linked to ancient Indian scripts and Sanskrit. Scholar Antoon Postma verified its authenticity, deciphered it, and published it as the Laguna Copper-plate Inscription (LCI), rewriting Philippine history.
3⃣Originally a 20x20 cm crumpled plate, the stretched out LCI measures 17.5 cm in height, 30.5 cm in width, and is 0.1 cm thick (photo below). It is now one of most precious historic treasure of Philippines.

1⃣Contains 10 lines.
2⃣Language is a curious mix of Sanskrit and languages inspired by South India: Old Malay, Old Javanese, Old Tagalog. Script is early Kawi, a South Indian-derivative.
3⃣Translation:

Hail! In the Saka-year 822; in Vaisakha month, according to jyotisha: the fourth of the waning fortnight, a Monday. At that time, Lady Angkatan together with her siblings, Bukah by name, the child of His Honor Namwran, was was awarded a viśuddhapātra (debt clearance document), officially, by Senapati (Army Commander) at Tundun with the title daṅ hvan nāyaka tuhān of Pailah Jayadeva.

Regarding the specifics of daṅ hvan Namwran, with the kāyastha (scribe), being cleared and resolved was his military debt of 1 kāṭi and 8 suvarṇa in front of witnesses daṅ hvan nāyaka tuhān of Puliran Kasumuran, daṅ hvan nāyaka tuhān of Pailah, with the title Ganasakti, daṅ hvan nāyaka tuhān of Binwangan, with the title Bisruta. By the deity official with the title official of Mdang, all her siblings together, [...] all children, grand-children of daṅ hvan Namwran were cleared together of the debt of daṅ hvan Namwran to the deity official.

If there be anyone who will doubt this, subsequently, in the days ahead; if there be people who will say “the debt of daṅ hva has not yet been resolved . . .

4⃣Incomplete. Additional plates likely lost.
5⃣Saka 822 = 900 AD. Sanskrit scholars have used Indian Jyotisha calculations to date this inscription to April 21 900 AD.

🏝️Significance
1⃣The inscription proves there existed a writing script in Philippines by 9th-century.
2⃣Colonial-era degree-carrying historians like Yale's Edward Bourne and others labeled the Philippines as uncivilized and barbaric before 1521. They claimed Spain civilized the country after its colonization and Christianization. Their argument: no evidence whatsoever that Filipinos had a written script, organized rule, laws. They were wrong. The above 1986 discovery disproves colonial narrative and history they taught. It also suggests that Spanish colonial conquest likely erased the pre-existing Filipino culture and civilization.
3⃣Inscription mentions "Kayastha" – document scribes. This implies an advanced stage of civilization with formal writers by 900 AD.
4⃣This plate is a legal document. It mentions titles like Senapati and Kayastha (Indian-influenced titles). Filipino people must have had laws and the concept of legal contract, debt release. Filipinos were not barbaric savages after all.
5⃣Inscription mentions Jayadeva, Ganasakti, etc. These are India-inspired names.
6⃣Manila is about 5500 km over the seas, via Singapore tip. Clearly, Indian influence had spread far by the 9th century. Philippines must have been well integrated with Southeast Asia and Indian trade networks before the 9th-century.
