Hi. I got laid off from @theheraldtimes today, so not sure what's going to happen in terms of local K-12 coverage at the moment. Thanks for following along, I appreciate you all.
@theheraldtimes If you want to blame anyone, blame @Gannett and its corporate greed. They don't value local news or care about their local communities, but the reporters at the H-T do. They're doing the absolute best they can to serve you, and I hope you'll continue to follow their amazing work.
Here's what the first day of school looked like for one freshman and one first grader at R-BB schools. How was your first day back?

As of late July, one program had about 80 more students to place, about 30 more than it typically has around that time of year. The deadline to place students with families is Aug. 31. https://t.co/hLnVmqdVyG
Rural school districts in Texas are switching to four-day weeks this fall due to lack of staff. Florida is asking veterans with no teaching background to enter classrooms.
The teacher shortage in America has hit crisis levels. https://t.co/ZynQwAQJEX
This is the MCCSC’s first year operating under a four-tier bus system, which is supposed to alleviate the district’s bus driver shortage and ensure students arrive on time. https://t.co/HRkyaAXDof
13,000 children are already in the foster care system in Indiana.
With the overturn of Roe v. Wade and restrictive abortion legislation up for Indiana's special session, some fear more children may end up in the system.

Been seeing a little confusion about what school board members can actually do/how they get paid/etc., so I talked to some experts from @isbanews to try and clear it up. https://t.co/ALOSAwNjox
Important story. It is confusing that state law requires the district to advertise this as a 35% rate increase when in fact the increase is less than 15% in the district rate and less than 5% in the overall local tax rate.
I hope you’ll take a minute to read the stories of these students and parents. It was inspiring to see them so passionate about making a change despite *gestures vaguely* everything.
Over 100 people (probably more, I’m bad at counting) just finished marching through downtown Bloomington as part of the national March for Our Lives rally. https://t.co/GC2dTahjlW
When Bloomington mom Jennifer Crossley sends her three kids off to school, she makes a mental note of what they’re wearing - in case she gets a call later that day and needs to identify their bodies.
