Politicians made the choice in June 2024. The Oireachtas approved the opt in. The State formally notified the EU on 27 June 2024. That is when the decision was made.

You can oppose the Migration Pact. You can condemn the Government for opting in. But pretending a petition or another Dail vote can simply undo a legally binding opt in is politics aimed at your emotions, not the facts.

Unless someone can point to the exact Treaty article that allows Ireland to unilaterally revoke a Protocol 21 opt in after notification, another Dail vote is pure theatre.

Ireland had the opt out. The Government chose not to use it. The State notified the EU. The deal is done.

The Social Democrats are Ireland's first truly second generation socialist party. In a nation that was creepingly socialist for decades, they are the first that feels no need to defend the inconsistencies in their ideology and beliefs. They feel free to shed old arguments and baggage because the ideological war has been won. They have emerged from the socialist/globalist alliance as the embodiment of 21st century socialism.

And as such, they feel no need to be rigorous. They are vacuous, they run on vibes, they don't care if you talk about their inconsistencies, they feel untouchable.

This is a difficult circle for Ireland's socialists to square.

Ireland is a socialist state. I cover this in detail in Vandalising Ireland. It has been since Dev got the nation hooked on handouts as part of his 1932 push for power. So in a socialist state, the left has to out-left FF/G by evolving. SF were too slow and acted as silent partners to FF/G for two decades so their socialist credentials are dented in their increasingly radical socialist part of the electorate.

Others, like the Social Democrats were faster.

While SF pretend to still care about the native Irish working class - while having abandoned them for immigrant causes as exemplified in the Coolock and East Wall IPAS controversies - the SD's simply didn't pretend. They fully embrace their upper middle class champagne socialism. They are the socialist more comfortable tweeting about late term abortion and trans rights than tenants rights. They fully embrace tweeting their deep socialist thoughts from Starbucks on their iPhone. They read their cliff notes summary of The Communist Manifesto in Premium Economy and Business Class on their weekend transatlantic shopping trip to NYC. US FDI multinational bosses get to be the tip of the US imperialist spear as it turns Ireland into a globalist blob but if they live in the right neighbourhood and share the most fashionable opinions imported from corporate America, they're part of the SD gang.

For the Holly Cairns elite - the second-generation of socialist capture of the Irish political establishment - socialism is a given so it's simply a fashion accessory. They do not need to fight for their turf or cover for their obvious ideological inconsistencies.

PBP, Labour and SF who have their roots in 20th Century Marxism still have to pretend to be deadly serious socialists. In the fine print of their economic policies are the hangovers of 20th Centiry Labour movements, specifically the idea of the tension between classes.

How do you square that circle in modern Ireland when the management class is now an imported, non-EU upper middle class and the worker class is native Irish? So far their response has been to ignore the problem - a good socialist can't be seen to advocate for white people overthrowing their minority overlords - or to simply call people racists for pointing it out.

The Social Democrats however, avoid all of this by being Ireland's first, second generation socialist party. They are airhead Socialists, overconfident in the total political and cultural superiority of socialism in Ireland over decades. It's all a lark, socialism is a brand, it's really no deeper than that.
