It's National Foster Care Month.
In West Virginia, 6,238 kids are in foster care.
The system is riddled with pervasive problems including losing track of kids & a crisis level social worker shortage. I've written about WV foster care for 3 years.🧵
West Virginia’s CPS vacancy rate is climbing. Some counties are missing half of its CPS workforce.
This means abused kids don’t receive help fast enough.
A 🧵 on my new story for @mtnstspotlight:
INBOX: Educational nonprofit @WaterfordOrg is launching its online kindergarten readiness program in West Virginia for free.
Qualifying families can have access to a free computer and internet, according to email.

Good story from @caitycoyne and @jj_severino exposing the state's fragile food system, this time on Charleston's West Side.
A Family Dollar burns down ... now people can't eat. Far too many people in WV rely on Family Dollar aisles for food.

Today a woman cried as she told me older West Virginians have started going food pantries for wound care items. They can't afford or access incontinence items, so they're making diapers out of towels and duct tape and wounds come later.
@WVGovernor, I hope you read this.
I checked in w/ the state auditor's office: Gov. Justice has not directly allocated any CARES Act money for hunger relief efforts in West Virginia.
Ok then.
