🇮🇱☀️ My name made headlines in Türkiye. Here is my response.

Following my participation in the Jewish and Kurdish conference in London, Cumhuriyet and Takvim reported on me and my work as President of the Kurdish Jewish Community in Israel. Takvim even credited me with organizing the conference and portrayed it as part of an Israeli Mossad operation.

Let us get the facts straight: Jewish and Kurdish organizations based in London organized the conference. I was invited to speak alongside participants from around the world. Look at the invitation and program: more than 50 speakers, only five of them from Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar sent a video greeting to the participants, emphasizing the importance of strengthening relations between Jews and Kurds.

This was a public gathering of academics, public figures and community representatives, with an openly published program. Portraying it as an intelligence conspiracy is absurd. And with a little humor: I am sure the Mossad does things far more cleverly and with better organization.

Here is my question to those making accusations in Türkiye, Iran and Iraq:

Is everyone who supports Palestinian independence, whose modern national identity took shape around a century ago, an agent of Turkish intelligence? Of course not.

Then why, when I support independence for the Kurdish people, whose roots are linked to peoples of the region more than 3,000 years ago, do some rush to associate me with the Mossad?

You cannot demand self determination for Palestinians while portraying support for Kurdish national aspirations as a conspiracy. Tens of millions of Kurds deserve freedom, security and dignity. These rights do not depend on the age of a national identity or the political convenience of any government.

Nor should the security and rights of Alawites and Druze be ignored. Every community deserves to be heard, to preserve its identity and to help shape its future.

I am Yehuda Ben Yosef, a Jerusalemite, an educator, a former member of the Jerusalem City Council and President of the Kurdish Jewish Community in Israel. I express my views openly and in my own name. My commitment is rooted in my family’s history and my public service.

My grandfather, Hacham Shalom Shimoni, of blessed memory, was the Hakham Bashi, or chief rabbi, of Duhok. My uncle, Haviv Shimoni, of blessed memory, came to Israel from Kurdistan as a child. He served on the Jerusalem City Council and in the Knesset, helped establish the national organization of Kurdish Jews in Israel and led it for 31 years.

His campaign to integrate children from Jerusalem’s Nachlaot neighborhood into schools in Rehavia particularly resonates with me. As an educator, I believe every child deserves an opportunity and the chance to take pride in their roots.

I seek to carry this legacy forward through education, public service and stronger ties between Jews and Kurds. I came to London to speak, to listen and to build cooperation that can continue into the next generation.

Those who disagree with me are welcome to challenge my arguments. Accusations of espionage are not an answer, and they will not silence me.

From Jerusalem, my message to Kurdish friends around the world is clear: I will continue working for our friendship and for your right to freedom, security and dignity, openly, responsibly and with my head held high.

ما «کورد ایرانی» نیستیم.

«کورد ایرانی»، «کورد ترکیه‌ای»، «کورد عراقی» و «کورد سوریه‌ای» تعریفی است که مرزهای سیاسی دولت‌ها به ما تحمیل کرده‌اند. هویت ما با پاسپورت و مرز سیاسی تعیین نمی‌شود.

ما کوردستانی هستیم؛ یک ملت با یک هویت ملی و سرزمینی که میان چهار دولت ایران، عراق، ترکیه و سوریه تقسیم شده است.

کوردستان را با خط‌کش سیاسی تکه‌تکه کردند و سپس از ما خواستند هر تکه را با نام همان دولت تعریف کنیم. از نگاه ما، این تقسیم جغرافیایی پایان مسئله کوردستان نیست؛ آغاز یک مسئله سیاسی است که هنوز حل نشده است.

دولت‌های حاکم بر چهار بخش کوردستان، در دوره‌های مختلف، با انکار هویت کوردی، سرکوب سیاسی، محدودیت زبانی و فرهنگی و سیاست‌های امنیتی تلاش کرده‌اند مسئله کوردستان را به «مسئله اقلیت‌ها» تقلیل دهند.

کوردستان فقط چند منطقه کوردنشین در چهار کشور نیست؛ بلکه یک واقعیت تاریخی و سیاسی و سرزمین یک ملت است که در نتیجه مرزبندی‌های سیاسی میان چهار دولت تقسیم شده است.

کوردستان یک مسئله ملی و سیاسی است.

ما مجبور نیستیم هویت خود را مطابق مرزهایی تعریف کنیم که بدون رضایت ما بر سرزمینمان کشیده شده‌اند.

ایران، عراق، ترکیه و سوریه می‌توانند شهروندی و پاسپورت تعریف کنند؛ اما نمی‌توانند به جای یک ملت، هویت ملی تعیین کنند.

ما کوردستانی هستیم. مسئله کوردستان وجود دارد؛ و تا زمانی که حق تعیین سرنوشت کوردها به رسمیت شناخته نشود، این مسئله را نمی‌توان با تغییر نام‌ها و مرزها از بین برد.
