Reducing what goes on in a boy’s head on his birthday to fake maturity is an evidence to how insensitive the other gender can be to a boy, many times even in relationships.

For boys, a lot of expectations are attached to age

While birthday is a call for studio photoshoot for some

for many boys, new age is a reminder of the apartment of their own that they should have had

It’s a reminder that they are getting too old to be where they’re financially, academically and relationship wise etc

On a normal day a boy could just sit and start thinking of how to move forward in life, that thinking is more intense on a birthday

So if they don’t send a picture of themselves as broadcast to all contacts on WhatsApp group for a repost, it’s not a flex

They are grateful for life, but when they have something truly worth celebrating they won’t hold back

It’s not fake maturity, we are usually on a date with reality and reality is not friendly.

A Gen Z joined the team.

Week one.

During onboarding, the manager said,
“We sometimes stay late during peak periods.”

Gen Z nodded.

Then asked,
“Is that paid… or just expected?”

The room went quiet.

- No attitude.
- No rebellion.
- Just a question.

Later that day, HR mentioned “growth opportunities.”

Gen Z replied,
“Does growth include raises, or just more responsibility?”

Again, silence.
- No laziness.
- No entitlement.
- Just clarity.

That’s when the team realized something.

When people say
“Gen Z is lazy,”
what they really mean is:

Gen Z watched old generation
- skip meals,
- miss birthdays,
- work weekends,
- and burn out

only to be told
“budgets are tight”
and “be grateful you have a job.”

So Gen Z chose differently.

- They don’t romanticize overwork.
- They don’t confuse suffering with ambition.
- They don’t trade health for praise.

They still work hard.
They just refuse to work for nothing.

It’s not laziness.
It’s pattern recognition.

And honestly,
after everything old generation went through…

During NYSC camp in Rivers State in 2014, soldiers routinely rounded up corps members who skipped SAED lectures to stay in the hostels or market. They tied them together like criminals and paraded them to the field in a degrading manner. I couldn’t accept it. Along with others from my school, we openly resisted, protested, and forced them to untie those people. It became national news that same day because the NYSC DG was scheduled to visit. The camp was thrown into chaos, and the DG had to postpone his visit until night.

That experience showed me one thing: injustice only survives when people keep quiet. What is happening now in Edo State is madness, and silence is no longer an option. People must come out and resist it. We need mass, peaceful action, students, market women, artisans, everyone. This is about survival. Kidnapping has become a daily threat, and lives are clearly at risk. If the people don’t push back together, nothing will change.
