"Voice for an Independent Tigray" Officially Launched with a Powerful Declaration of Sovereignty

June 2, 2025 – Dc In a bold and emotional public statement, the Voice for an Independent Tigray (VIT) was officially launched Yesterday, calling for Tigray's full independence and a new era of justice, dignity, and self-rule. Framed as a movement of purpose not politics VIT aims to unify Tigrians around one goal: reclaiming their right to govern themselves.

“We are not begging for freedom,” the founding statement proclaims. “We are claiming a right earned through suffering, defended in blood, and carried forward by the unbreakable will of a people who refuse to be erased.”

A Historic Turning Point for Tigray

The movement's launch comes after years of devastation from war, famine, and political marginalization. In its address, VIT leaders reflected on the region’s long history of resistance and resilience from the ancient Aksumite Kingdom to modern struggles against oppression.
The statement describes the atrocities faced by Tigrians in recent years as unparalleled:

“Tigray was transformed into a killing field. Civilians were slaughtered in their homes, women systematically raped, entire communities starved, and our cultural heritage was bombed and burned.”

Despite this suffering, the people of Tigray “stood with unyielding courage,” it states. They “built with dignity, bled with valor, and wept with unending grief but never surrendered their humanity or their right to justice.”

From Betrayal to Bold Action

VIT leaders emphasized Tigray’s role in shaping modern Ethiopia, including its leadership in introducing a federal system that recognized ethnic and cultural diversity. Yet, the statement says, those contributions were repaid with betrayal.

“Tigray gave Ethiopia a vision of unity built on equality, not domination… but what we received in return was genocide, starvation, displacement, and desecration.”

Even after the 2022 Pretoria Agreement, the statement asserts, peace remains an illusion. Tigray’s lands are occupied, and millions remain displaced. The movement accuses both national and international actors of ignoring the region’s suffering.

A Movement Born of Necessity, Not Hate

VIT makes clear that this is not a movement of revenge but of survival and hope.
“We rise not just in remembrance of the pain we endured but in pursuit of a future where no one will be silenced or erased again,” the statement declares.

“This is not a retreat. It is a moral, legal, and historical affirmation of our right to govern ourselves.”

The statement calls for the creation of a democratic, inclusive, and lawful Tigray “a Tigray that leads, not just for itself, but as a beacon of hope and justice for oppressed peoples everywhere.”
A Call to the Youth and Diaspora

Addressing Tigrians around the world, the VIT statement calls on the diaspora, youth, and all survivors of war to join the movement. It urges collective action to build a sovereign nation rooted in dignity and justice.

“To the youth and diaspora: this is your call. Your voice, your action, and your unity are what will make this movement succeed.”
The statement ends with a defiant and repeated promise:

“Never again shall we be ruled by those who see us as enemies. Never again shall our voice be muted. Never again shall Tigray beg to exist.”

Looking Forward

Voice for an Independent Tigray positions itself as a unifying movement, stating it is not aligned with any political party. Instead, it stands for the basic right of Tigrians to determine their future.

“This is our time. This is our voice declaring our march toward justice and independence.”
The full statement concludes with a call to march forward united, unwavering, and unafraid.

“We are the people of Tigray unbroken, unbowed, and unafraid. We light the torch of our sovereignty. And we march together toward freedom.”

Does she already knew that her tenure as president will not be renewed for another five years? Is this is a last minute desperate act to leave the palace on supposedly ‘high moral ground’?
