After Henry Nowak Tragedy, Peter Hitchens Makes Controversial Call to Abolish Britain’s Entire Police Force and Start Again

“I have to say it’s been a long time since I’ve thought or imagined for a moment that I would ever say, “Oh, great. The police have arrived.” It’s astounding to me how long it has taken our society to notice the disaster which has happened to the police.”

Hitchens, a long-time critic of Britain’s broken policing system, doesn’t mince words on the solution:

“My position has been now for some time… The only thing we can do now is to create a new police force on sound principles and train it and as soon as it’s ready abolish and dismiss all the existing police forces which are totally useless and could not by any effort or any will of man be turned into anything that was useful. They all need to go off and do something else.”

This isn’t the left-wing ‘defund the police’ idea. It’s a conservative call to scrap the broken system and start again from scratch, end two-tier policing and go back to the original basics of good policing: preventing crime before it happens, having officers who are part of the local community, and policing that ordinary people actually support.

Landlords are bailing out. New research shows that some 254,000 buy-to-let properties in Britain came on to the market in the year to the end of March. That's 700 a day & it's an increase of 28% over 2024.

Taxing & regulating landlords out of the market will result in tenants paying higher rents. It's such an obvious point but many politicians refuse to understand it.

Labour's Renters Rights Act championed by Angela Rayner has now kicked in,

triggering a mass exodus of landlords who are selling up in droves and booting tenants out before the new rules fully bite,

almost half of more than 1,000 landlords surveyed said they will stop renting entirely once the legislation takes full effect,

the brainchild of Deputy PM Rayner scraps no-fault evictions, limits rent rises to once a year and forces landlords to accept benefit tenants or risk prosecution,

this has sparked a surge in evictions with tenants given notice so properties can be sold off,

middle-income landlords now face bankruptcy risks from longer arrears periods while the rental market shrinks fast,

critics say Rayner’s heavy-handed reforms are making the housing crisis far worse by driving supply down and rents up,

ordinary families are left scrambling for fewer homes as the very people who provide rentals are chased out,
