I’ve always had a question in my heart: after death, is there really a soul? Can we still reincarnate and come back again?
I think these questions come from a deep fear of death, and also from missing loved ones who have already passed. After thinking it over again and again, what I believe most is what people online often say: death is like a general anesthesia from which you never wake up. There is nothing—no thoughts, no soul, no feeling, no perception, no dreams.
Compared with other ideas, this version makes death feel even more terrifying and bleak, with no hope left. But I can’t help it; I just tend to believe that’s what it will be.
Then I thought again: before we were born, wasn’t it the same? We spent who knows how many hundreds of millions of years with no awareness at all. So death is only returning us to where we originally came from—fallen leaves going back to their roots. It’s as if nothing ever happened.
That thought makes me a little more at peace. Everything around me—people and things, the good and the bad—suddenly feels all the more precious.
