A student needed prompting to explain his choice of colours for an Art assignment.
I made the mistake of switching from fairly monotone communication to 🎶 “Tell me Wwhhyyyy!”
Before this Grade 5 could give an answer, the whole class replies, “Ain’t nothin’ but a heeaart ache!”
@janisday@PicturesFoIder@AMAZlNGNATURE Similar story to what happened with my aunt. She was hiking on Corsica, there were two dudes who decided to hike with her, but partway through she agreed to let them go ahead while she went slower. She made it a little further then slipped at fell.
As a prep teacher, I have reached the point where I apparently have 16 names, according to how my students address me:
- “Ms. Venn.”
- “Teacher.”
- One of the 13 classroom teacher names.
- “Mom.”
Post a picture of some landscape from a place where you've been, where the main requirement is that you NOT appear in it. Just a picture, no description.
Lets travel virtually around the world.
While prepping one of my students for a spelling test today, we had a moment of joy:
I learned that a great way to motivate a kid to write lowercase “p”s (when needed) is to lightly write “poo” on the margins of their practice page if they use a capital P.
The power of humour.
Man, these textbooks are really out of date. It’s been, what, ~200 million years since North America and Africa were part of the same supercontinent? 😂
Working with kids, I have yet to see a drag queen cause trauma to a child.
I can’t say the same about kids whose fathers commit spousal abuse.
Perhaps story time with drag queens is one of the many ways to confront toxic masculinity.
Elementary teaching means interrupting your lesson on colonialism to privately talk about “healthy choices” to the Primary student who just grabbed a long hair off the carpet and put it in their mouth.
🙃
@EveAinsworth Fellow teachers and I suspect we caught RSV from the kids. Whatever it was, it kicked off almost 4 weeks of coughing. That was immediately followed by another bug that also entailed coughing, with a likely 3rd bug tucked in there. After 2 months of coughing, my diaphragm is DONE.
@llmunro I find that if I’m giving away art pieces, it both brings more joy to the process and keeps up my pace.
Recently, my Grade 4-6 students have been making origami animal drawings using pencil crayon blending.
I’ve been having fun making more demos than necessary. 😂
To my credit, the new foam dodgeballs are MUCH harder to throw. The rubber, textured ones c. 2010 would get serious traction on the skin and hurt like heck when they hit, but they were easier to quickly send across a gym.
It currently hurts on my right side to laugh/cough. Clearly my efforts to boost morale by joining yesterday’s Grade 7 dodgeball face-off should have been preceded by a decent stretch session.

I’m a Teacher On Call in Canada. Today, I had an Intermediate student ask what I thought about her idea for a barrier to hide and protect everyone in a classroom during a school shooting.
Kids should not feel unsafe in their schools, nor a need to have these conversations.
