I traveled to Shenzhen, a 2 & half flight from Beijing to witness the signing of a MOU between Shenzhen Technology University (SZTC), China and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Nigeria, and AMA Medical Manufacturing Limited, Nigeria. This is the kind of partnership I have been calling for: a partnership between the Academia and Industries. In this case, both SZTC and ABU focus on R & D, with SZTC providing the bulk of technology, while AMA focus on manufacturing.

This tripartite cooperation will focus on biomedical sciences, AI, and other disciplines. Specific areas of cooperation are on the development of pharmaceuticals and vaccines for local needs in Nigeria; clinical research in Nigeria; talent development and exchange; commercial cooperation in local manufacturing, packaging, and distribution; and biomedical research infrastructural developments in ABU.

Those present in the event on the NIGERIAN SIDE were my humble self; Professsor Ahmed Adamu, Vice Chancellor, ABU; Dr Abdulsalami Nasidi, Chairman, AMA Medical Manufacturing Limited; and on the CHINESE SIDE were Professor Fu Gao, the Chair of the Academic Committee of the Institute for Global Health and Microbiome, SZTC, and also Chair of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and also former DG, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention; Chen Qiuming, Secretary of the Party Committee of SZTU; and Fu Jiyang, President of SZTU.

This signing demonstrated our shared commitment to innovation and development between Nigeria and China. It took place within the broader framework of the Belt & Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) under which both countries built strong partnerships in public health, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and human capital development.

Despite the delay we experienced at the airport and even landing due to bad weather, I found the journey of almost 4 hours instead of the normal 2 hrs plus, worth the while. We ended the visit by taking a tour to the BYD electric vehicle manufacturer showroom.... SZTU, a public institution established by Guandong Province and Shenzhen Municipality, is only ten years old but one can only imagine the extent of its achievements in terms of infrastructure, staffing, and equipment.

A four-member delegation from Jigawa State Government paid a courtesy call on me while on tour to China preparing ground for the arrival of 65 students coming from the state to study in various agricultural and technical universities in China.

The delegation was led by Professor Isa Yusuf Chamo, Hon Commissioner for Higher Education, Science and Technology. Other members were Professor Abbas Jaafaru Badakaya, Executive Secretary, Jigawa State Science and Technical Schools Board; Dr Saifullahi Umar, Director General, Jigawa State Agricultural Transformation Agency; and Alhaji Saidu Magaji, Executive Secretary, Jigawa State Scholarship Board.

Andy Wang, Chief Representative Officer, First Bank of Nigeria Ltd., Beijing, China, was on courtesy call on me to exchange views and to seek my advice on the current business environment and the specific needs of the Nigerians in China. Furthermore, we dicussed the role cross-border RMB (chinese currency) settlement in facilitating and streamlining trade between China and Nigeria. We agreed to co-host a Roundtable seminar for Nigerian and Chinese businesses to foster stronger business ties and provide a platform for dialogue and partnership.
