🚨Virgil van Dijk on his altercation with Jordan Henderson after Liverpool defeated Chelsea in a penalty shootout.
🎙️Van Dijk: We had just won the shootout when Henderson walked over to me complaining about Liverpool fans booing him on his return to Anfield.
He said, “After everything I gave Liverpool, these fans are fucking ungrateful. I spent years at this club, and they boo me like I’m nobody.”
I looked at him and said, “Are you finished?”
He replied, “What the fuck are you talking about?”
I told him, “You left Liverpool, joined Chelsea, and now you’re complaining that Liverpool fans aren’t welcoming you back. What exactly did you expect?”
He said he deserved respect for everything he’d done for the club.
I answered, “Respect isn’t something you demand. You don’t get to dictate how supporters feel about you.”
He started listing his trophies and years as captain, so I told him, “Jordan, stop acting like you’re the only person who ever played for Liverpool. Plenty of players sacrificed everything for this badge, and they don’t demand that supporters worship them forever.”
He got angry and said, “You’re talking to me like I did nothing for Liverpool!”
I replied, “Then stop behaving like the club owes you something! You’re a Chelsea player now. Concentrate on Chelsea instead of lecturing Liverpool fans about gratitude!”
He asked if I thought I was better than him because I was captain.
I told him, “This isn’t about who’s better. You’re blaming the same people who supported you for years. And if we’re talking about betrayal, stop pointing fingers at everyone else. You’re the one who needs to explain your decisions, not me.”
He told me not to speak to him like that. I said, “Then don’t come looking for sympathy if you can’t handle the truth.”
You cannot leave a club, join its rivals and expect supporters to owe you unconditional loyalty forever. I respect what Henderson did at Liverpool, but that doesn’t mean he’s entitled to control how the fans feel.
